I really don't like the upper dash on the new Colorado. It's got a sandwich stack look to it that I feel would lead to rattles down the road.

I have to disagree in regards to feeling plasticky, while Toyota's interiors are more reserved than the latest GMs, Toyota is far from soft touch...

Just read MT's write up on the Colorado. There are 2 reasons I like Chevy is brining it back. #1) Diesel....Kudos to GM for having the courage to introduce that engine in a smaller truck, when nobody else has the balls too. #2) Competition is a good thing and Toyota needs that. The Taco is a fine truck (and I love mine), but there's always room for improvement. Maybe not being the "only kid on the block" in the small/midsize truck market will spur The Big T to push future Tacos to be the tough, rugged, innovative vehicle they will need to be to ensure competitiveness in the long run.

I think the "there is always room for improvement" attitude is where companies get into trouble and where consumers expose their double standard.

What I mean by that, is it's never good for a company to become complacent about a product....even a good one. Competition is usually a good thing for consumers. Are you suggesting that Toyota sit on it's laurels with regards to the Taco?

I hate the interior on the new equinox , the center console is way to busy .

My father in law has one and there just way to much stuff crammed in the center and everything is so small .

I get a headache just trying to turn the heat up .

In my opinion more high tech isn't always better .

They do need to fix some things, such as the 6speed, but I would bet money toyota will throw in the 4runners v8 prior to developing a brand new diesel.

Is there really a point in having a "midsized" truck 90% the size of a full sized pickup? no. Not to mention the price of the tacoma is already about 80-85% of the tundra.

I doubt toyota will do much besides updating the appearance of the Tacoma and throwing in the 4runners v8. If they make the Tacoma any bigger they will have to make the tundra bigger already complain about how bloated that thing is.

Even though this Colorado is growing on me, I think chevy had it right with their previous Colorado....two different trucks for two different kinds of people. With things getting bigger and more powerful, companies are competing against themselves.

Just look what happened to the ford ranger. Among other reasons, if they made it any bigger it would start competing with the F series because people would be able to do more with it as opposed to having to step up into the F series.

I certainly don't think that the Taco needs to be bigger. But Toyota should up their game a bit with configurations and engine choices. I'd love to have a 4 cyl diesel with a 6 speed combo. Also I think Toyota should offer all engine and tranny combos in all versions...regular cab, xtra cab, quad cab, 2wd, 4wd. If someone wants a base truck with the 4.0L and a 6 speed they should be able to.

I thought they tried the 4.7 in the 4R around '03 or '04?

I had to look it up.
The 4.7 was only used in the 4th Gen. 5th Gen gets only the 2.7 or 4.0.
Further, looking up the #UZ, it shows the 1UZ being installed in the 4R for '03 and '04, 2UZ for '05-'09.

I am on toyotas website because the 2.7 does not sound right w/ the new 4R :p

They only offer the 4.0 with it.

I always thought the fj had a v8 package as well, guess not. But....goes to show that the current 4.0 does fine and the 4.7 wasnt a seller :D
(different engines between the tacoma and 4r right?)

But toyota skips from the 4.0 to the 5.7. I didnt see anything with the 4.7 :notsure:

Could be a US market thing... might be available with the 2.7 in other areas. But I was looking on Wiki, so it may be incorrect.

Ya, never had a V8 in the FJ or Tacoma, and it was never that popular in the 4R. I've never seen one on a dealer lot and have never met anyone with one. The 4.0 is a great engine.

And yes... I had an '03 Tundra and that little 4.7 was a screamer.

You can look at my screen-name and see that I like them simple as well. And I wish someone made a small, simple, rugged pickup these days. If I could find an '87 Toyota base pickup in a time capsule I would be more than happy to drive it right now.

But the reality is...that's not the way trucks are anymore...and I doubt ever will be again. Adapt or die...that's just the way business is.

Yep, available in '03-'09 and gave the 4R a 7000-lb towing capacity. Basically made the 4R a less-luxurious version of the GX470. The V8 4R didn't sell well because it coincided with the increase in gas prices, and on paper the power output wasn't much more than the 4.0L V6 (though torque was higher).

It is certain possible to order a regular cab Taco today with manual-crank windows, simple stereo, and a bench seat, but few people buy them. In fact, 55% of Taco sales are well-optioned double cab models. There are reports the regular cab will be gone when the Taco is redesigned, very much like how it is today with the Frontier and Colorado.

I'm one of those guys. I deliberately bought a regular cab, 2wd, manual tranny with crank windows. My only option is the sliding rear glass (which I like). I wouldn't have it any other way. No simple radios in them anymore though. They're all touch screen HU's....mine included.

    My '86 Mazda B2000....now there's a simple vehicle. No a/c, no power steering...nothing.

Yeah, I can see that the market for those arent that great…and the added space of an ex cab or double cab helps when you always need the extra space. If toyota still made the smaller versions of trucks, id buy one. It would be prime having the option between a tundra, tacoma and a Hilux(smaller version, bed side lip and hooks).
There was a lot of people who love the 96-04 3.4 tacomas…I had both at the same time, but in the few years I had my 02, there was many problems, and although supercharged, it was not hard to love the 4.0. Now that ive owned my double cab for a number of years, I wouldnt mind finding myself a 01-04 4 dr for when I dont need the double cab.

Ive always had older model yota trucks thru the years. I still drive a 86 single cab and 88 extra cab. I also have 2 older frontiers that I use for work and I also have some full size Fords when I need to drive something bigger. I love old technology and simple stuff, but always having something newer for what I need is always good too. Cant make everyone happy but if could have simpler versions of things too would always be good.

I didn't bother to read all 11 pages of this, but that rear pass door/window looks like it came off a Tacoma as does the lower valance on the front end.
