The V8 is only in 4th gen 4Runners (03-09) and it looks like OP is in the market for a brand new 5th gen by what he said about 2014's looking good.

If the current 4Runner had a V8, I wouldn't be driving a Tacoma lol. It has full time 4WD too, not that I need it.

I did it again. Got tired of paying truck payments and gas and traded in for a 2015 Honda Accord Sport since I enjoyed my 2013 Sport so much.
To be honest, on the paper the 4Runner looks like the better vehicle and one that I wish I had picked this time instead of getting the Taco again.

Larger fuel tank, more modern design/technologies, etc.

Probably less build problems too, as evidenced by all the noises/low MPG/vibration/etc threads here.

I have a 2013 trd off road taco and my wife has a 2013 4 runner and I love my truck but I also love to take her 4 runner when I have a chance. It rides so much better and the sun roof and power rear hatch roll down window is the best thing in the summer next to having an convertible not to mention the leather power seats :)

Haha I've also thought about this exact situation before. I have a 2006 TRD Sport 4x4 and I also like the look of the new 4runners. I have no use for an SUV right now cause in 2012 I bought a Dodge Challenger R/T. Once thats paid off though or gets close to it I might consider buying a 4runner and doing some mods to it. If you can afford it I'd say keep your current Tacoma and buy that 4runner!!

yeah that's what I am seeing on paper I guess I really need to head over to a 4runner forum and research them out even more but I haven't found any bad things so far,

wow larger fuel tank? I didn't even know that's awesome the Tacoma tank is way to small

ehh everything has its problems but I personally haven't had any in the Tacoma plus I get right around 22mpg that's something that I am not sure if the 4runner could do or not but is not really a big deal

I have no plans on getting rid of my Tacoma, I need a truck. But I am slowly trying to persuade the wife to let me trade her '13 Subaru Outback Limited for a new SR5, 4WD 4R, or splurge for the TRD-Pro (Looks down right sexy in red).

Like everyone else here, I loved the V8, 4th gens as well (My dad drives an '05 V8) so I have plenty of seat time in it. But isn't the new V6 more powerful, quicker, tows more? Just asking, because on paper it looks like it should?

I was in your exact situation OP and pulled the trigger on a slightly used 2014 4Runner. I am in love with it. I loved my Tacoma but like you, only used the bed a few times a year. With the seats folded down in the 4Runner, it's the same size as the bed of the Tacoma. As long as you don't have to haul something super tall, it's doable. I'm loving all the creatures comforts the Tacoma was missing…power seats, moonroof, heated side mirrors, heated windshield wipers, and more things come standard in the lower SR5 package too. Better ride too. DO IT!!!!

Plus it just looks bad ass…

Wow that looks awesome with those rims I think this may be the best looking 4runner they've built. but heated windshield wipers?! haha that's awesome! I think I am going to just want some more research before I do any flaws or anything you see with it yet?

The Trail edition rims are definitely the best looking out of all of Toyota's wheels. It was funny, there was a button in the 4Runner and I was like, "Wtf is that for?". I looked it up and it was the windshield wiper heater. Crazy. I've only had it for a week so I haven't seen any major flaws. The ride is quite and smooth. I now have the touch screen nav and moonroof I've always wanted. It's getting the same MPGs as my 4x4 Tacoma was getting, even with the bigger tires (I had stock steelies and tires on my Tacoma). Test drive one and you'll drive out of the dealership with it. My Tacoma was a 2012 so I was able to buy the 4Runner because of the trade in value of the Tacoma.

    Agreed.

This is exactly what I did. My wife had a Kia Sorento 4x4. She now drives a new Trail 4R.

    See above. :D

Did you swap the trail edition wheels or did the dealership/previous owner? Cause the 2014 trail wheels are different. Also, I have not yet found the heated wiper button. Pic?

Oh, and I agree. If you don't use the bed and go test drive a 4Runner, you'll buy it. It just rides way too nice.

I bought my truck because my wife likes trucks (She likes Ford diesel trucks and makes fun of how small mine is, but that's besides the point). I never thought I'd use the bed as often as I do. I've always enjoyed getting off pavement and like the power and road clearance offered by SUVs and Trucks. Honestly, if it weren't for my wife, i'd have probably gotten the 4Runner for myself. But now I have the best of both worlds.

Yeah, the 2014 Trail edition does not have these wheels (a shame). The previous owner swapped them out. Glad he did.

    The button…

How does the power compare in this .vs the Tacoma 4.0 V6? I know the 4Runner has more hp & torque, but being heavier and all (I think?) does it feel quicker than a 2nd gen Tacoma? This is one of my only gripes really, I was following a thread on T4R forums, where a member bought a brand new '14, 4R and had a lift, tires and a few other mods in the first week. He stated the SUV felt very sluggish after adding 33" Tires and such. Just trying to get a feel if the V6 is really enough for this vehicle.

My dad has an '05 V8 T4R, and I used to have a JGC with a V8, but on paper this 4.0 V6 is suppose to be more powerful.

According to Toyota the 4x4 SR5 4R is 180 pounds heavier than the Tacoma 4x4 Doublecab short bed(4400 vs. 4220).

Then again the 4R has all the latest technologies for the 1GR-FE so it probably evens out at the end.

Ive heard the Tacoma's engine described more as a "dog" than having ample power...
