    Hello TW...

During a recent browse of current threads, I noticed that a TSB (T-SB-0044-14) was issued to address the problem of engine pinging @ ~1500 RPM under acceleration that affects 2012+ Tacomas. I'm considering having this TSB performed on my 2013 4x4 SRB DCSB.

Let's get some responses charted from people who have had this TSB performed. It's always good to chart the effectiveness of an important repair.

The question is, what does the reprogramming actually do.... retard the timing more when it gets hot out?

BTW where did you source this TSB and its subsequent PDF?

Good to see there is a fix for this now, mine pings on 93 in hot weather. Although they have a re flash now I'm going to wait until i hear some feedback, i have seen people question a re flash for this issue on here stating its going to reduce power.

To answer your first question, I'm not sure. I haven't looked into it yet enough to know what settings change in the programming.

    To answer your second question....Here:

This is the exact reason why I started this thread. It would be good to get feedback on the results of this TSB being performed.

Apparently, as part of the TSB, Toyota will place an "Authorized Modifactions Label" to the underside of the hood. Should look something like this...

What about us with the 2011 and earlier? Any TSB for us? My pinging came back this week once the temp went above 90. Good to know the emission warranty is longer than the standard warranty...

Not sure. Good question. This is the only TSB I have found related to pre-detonation or pinging.

What surprises me is the relative low amount of publicity this TSB has had on the forum, especially with the amount of people that have reported having this problem.

i have never had any issues *knocks on wood* just the other week did 700mi round trip in 110+*F temps.... and part of that was a climb from 3k feet to 8k in 10 mi or so at 70mph.

I bet many people here or out there won't even know their truck is pinging. You really have to pay attention and know what pinging sounds like in most cases.

True. Even so, it seems like the topic has surfaced many times in the 2nd Gen section.

I think my job position as a farm equipment service/parts manager and OCD personality trait cause me to notice issues such as this "pinging" more than some folks. When some of our work has us measuring clearances in the .001 and .00001, it's very important to pay full attention to detail. See below.

I am also fully aware of the shitty things that happen with knock.... As a field service tech for cummins, I deal directly with 2500hp engines that run on both diesel and natural gas. Saw one today, too much detonation and poof their goes #16 cyl, nothing like a dead 300,000$ engine.

I have had this issue with my 2013, I am hoping someone chimes in with experience with this TSB. Hope they have it up in Canada, although we dont see warm temps up here often...haha

I am sure we will hear some feedback soon enough, there are some long ongoing threads regarding this issue. I am surprised though that this hasn't been getting much attention as stated above. My truck goes in tomorrow for the Drivetrain vibration TSB I will see if the tech has heard any info on this TSB yet.

technically though shouldnt the knock sensors be sensing these pre-detonations and retarding the timing because of it?

maybe its just not agressive enough to combat it.

In theory yes the knock sensors should be taking care of the issue but they fall short it seems. I run 93 in my truck and I have no hills where I live and my truck pings right at that 1500rpm sweet spot just after shifting into o/d. Its much worse when the a/c is on as well, I will probably have the TSB done even if it reduces power as I am concerned of damage this may be causing. TSB's are starting to become the life of my Tacoma..

Im definitely curious with the outcome of the TSB. My truck started pinging on 87 a few months after I bought it. However after running 93 it has completely gone away even in the summer heat. I would like to go back to running 87 but I don't really want to sacrifice any power or mpg that may be affected by reducing timing and changing the engine parameters.

X2. My '13 started pinging this summer too only when it's hot out. The next tank will be higher octane to see if that helps.

Exactly. I'm eager to see the results as well. I printed out the TSB and am thinking of bringing it by the local dealership along with my Tacoma.

Same here. Surprised about the lack of attention this has received. Please post and let us know what the tech tells you. Thanks!

Please let us know your results. I'm considering bringing my truck to someone with a dyno before the TSB and posting results, then having the TSB performed and running through the dyno again...just need to find a local dyno that is willing to participate (and is calibrated accurately )

EXACTLY my thoughts. You nailed it. I'd like to go back to running 87, but would prefer not to sacrifice power or fuel economy. I've been tracking my mileage since the truck was brand new...every...single...fuel up. This should help determine post-TSB effects on mileage.

Premium or Mid-octane fuel should solve your problem 95%. Even so, I started fueling up with ONLY Premium fuel in my '13 DCSB (beginning at roughly 15,000 miles...currently at 29,000 miles), and sometimes I still notice pre-detonation/pinging.

    me here

    93 octane no ping

87 octane, slight ping as described, and it does stop when temp goes lower, I just noticed that today temp dropped from 90 to 70 overnight and today up a slight hill, silent.

my ping is minor and falls into the category of 'the owners manual states this is normal' so I am not really too concerned...I'm wanting this TSB but only if it doesn't kill overall mileage. if the reprogram is specifically temperature related and the ecu map is different only above 80 I am game...

why oh why did Toyota use this 4 liter engine...my 4runner with the 5vzfe never had a damn issue with pings, power, sooty exhaust, anything...rock solid for the last 15 years....wish I had that motor in my 2013 Tacoma. sure it has less HP and less torque, but also it's unstoppable and everything is perfect
