I'm thinking of buying a stock roof rack, but the weight limit is 75lbs, I want to be able to carry 2 kayaks on it, my kayak weighs 54lbs itself and I'm sure my friends is around the same. Would it be okay to put 100-120lbs on it or is 75lbs really all you should do? If so, what roof rack would you recommend that can carry more weight? I don't want to spend a whole lot of money. I was originally thinking of making my own bed rack, but I've always wanted a roof rack for my truck (actually roof basket). Anyone have any recommendations on a roof rack or roof basket that could support two kayaks?

You should be able to find some used ones on Craigslist to save money. The only thing you would need to buy are what they call the feet attachments. Find one make for your truck.

    A few bolts are different.
I use 72" Yakima bars attached to my factory roof rack. It holds plenty of weight. See my gallery.

Edit: towards end of build thread is where you can find pics.

It's not much of a difference but my stock roof rack limit is 100lbs.

I'm trying to find the yakima 72" cross bars but can only find 66 and 78, any idea where to find the 72's?

I'm sure 66 will fit, or get 78 and cut them down.

72 was a guess. They are the 78's overhang is even with mirrors. Able to do two canoes side by side.
