Is giving up the power of a v6 really worth the supposed mpg realistically, I would be driving 60 miles everyday combined on highway. 2.7L or V6?

No. As an owner of a dcsb v6, I can not imagine having any less power. I would only get a 4 cylinder dc if it was a crazy good deal.

my dad commutes about 60 miles a day with his v6. He has considered trading it in for a 4cyl access cab though. i have a feeling the 2.7 would be gutless in a double cab.

Realistically you might only get 2-3 mpg better than a 4.0L 4wd Tacoma. If your drive is hilly you might get the same as a 4.0L 4wd. If you put a lift kit and big tires on it, you will probably get worse mileage than a 4.0L 4wd. Honestly I don't see the point of a 2.7L double cab prerunner. It seems like a horrible compromise to put the 4 cyl. engine in a 4000 lb. double cab chassis with no MPG advantage over the V6 and no 4wd to play with either. If MPG is such a concern get a 2.7L 2wd Tacoma that isn't a prerunner and if you really need the passenger space get a car instead.

I have a 2.7 DCSB Prerunner and I like it a lot. I got it as a daily driver that would occasionally get used for hauling a bed full of whatever. I didn't expect it to be fast or race Honda Civics with it. I didn't expect to pull a 35' camping trailer. But I wanted the utility of a truck without terrible gas mileage.
So far, I've been satisfied. Do I occasionally wish I had the v6? Sure, but only when getting on the highway from an uphill ramp. Otherwise, it moves pretty well. Way better than my 2.2L regular cab S-10 ever did. I couldn't get that truck to go up a mole hill with the A/C on. P/M me if you have any specific questions.
