It appears that my 4x4 actuator is leaking, i'm assuming its a bad 0-ring...is this a tough one to fix? I read that if you just pull the actuator without dropping the entire diff that you will screw it all up...anyone had this problem and fixed it themselves?

I am assuming this is the actuator...can I pull it, replace the o-ring, and just bolt it back on? I read somewhere a while ago that doing this would somehow get the gears out of line...any help would be greatly appreciated since the leak is getting worse.

That's the transfer case. The actuator housing is on the front axle... it's tough to see it from the front.

The part leaking is attached to the t-case, so are you saying the part that is leaking is the transfer case actuator?

There are TWO 4wd actuators on our trucks. One on the T-case as shown in the pic with the black plastic cover, and the other on the front diff. The O-ring is a bear to replace, but not impossible. You have to remove the plastic cover, remove the plastic gear and clockspring, remove the 4wd indicator switches, and remove the worm gear. Then you unbolt the aluminum piece off the t-case. I think there is some kind of C-clip or retainer on the shaft as well, but I can't remember exactly. The book wants you to split the case to remove it. If I were you, I would top it off each oil change and forget about it.

As far as alignment on reassembly, if you push the shaft all the way in it's 2hi. One click out is 4hi, all the way out is four low. If you take it apart in 2hi, put it together in 2 hi and don't move the white plastic gear. I managed to tear one apart and get it functioning, but that doesn't mean everyone can.

Thanks for the info, I actually found someone in my area that has replaced his, and is willing to take the time to come lend a hand.

I would just forget about it and top it off, but I am tired of having to put down kitty litter and power wash my driveway! I also spend multiple days on the beach up to 60 miles from anywhere and would hate for it to start gushing fluid out there in the sand...I hate working on trucks in the sand!
