Only slightly less fugly. At least it has a decent ride height and tires that fit the truck.

Yeah, I won't be trading in my '08 any time soon. I can guarantee the third gen will be more car like. No thanks.

Probably the differentials also, at least in comparative gas trucks.

Toyota is a global manufacturer and I could definitely see them at least partially combining the platforms. Maybe them sharing the frame and perhaps the suspension. Toyota hasn't had good luck with the Tacoma frame anyway. Sheet metal could be different, b/c American buyers expect a more "trucky" look than the rest of the world.

Or I could be totally off base.
Toyota is notoriously tight lipped about new products in the pipeline so I guess we'll just see when it gets here.

I thought the Hilux only got the 1GR-FE in 2005?

Maybe a more car like version would be better? As it stands right now, the car like Honda Ridgeline has more payload than the Tacoma.

Small trucks are facing 1 key issue Fuel economy. The manufactures need to cut wieght and create aerodynamic vehicles. To make the small truck relivant. If large trucks fuel economy is as good or better what reason do people have to buy small trucks? Well, this is the way manufactures think.

I bought my small truck because its size. It can fit through my narrow gate into my back yard, its much easier to drive offroad, its smaller size allows me to go down more trails.

Toyota will create a vehicle that they think the public needs and that new looking car-truck might be it. You also need to realize that when they start designing these things it takes two years to get this far.. What was going on two years ago? Everyone was complaining about fuel economy..

I saw one of these being used as a work truck today. It looked fine to me, though I found it odd seeing a large VW logo on a truck grill.
Give it a lift and some big tires and it would probably look as mean as any other mid-size.

I'd like to see companies re-intro something sized like the 80's mini trucks again (Toyota Pickup; Nissan Hardbody, S-10, etc) again. With a modern 4 cylinder there's no reason you couldn't have plenty of power and decent MPG's.

One of those hilux's is a five lug. The other two appear to be 6 lugs. I can count the lugs on the red one. That 5 lug has to be a two wheel drive version just going by ground clearance, and the design seems to resemble the 5 lug Tacoma with the really flat fender sides.

http://indianautosblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/2016-Toyota-Hilux-spied-in-Argentina.jpg This one looks like the first and last picture in your post except the red hilux doesn't have as much clearance in the wheel wells. Has fog lights that the 5 lug doesn't have and the fenders seem to have more flare to them. Grill and bumper cover are different too.

It will be interesting to see one uncovered ready for sale.

ETA: Is the red one supposed to be Tacoma because the more I look at it the less it looks like the hilux's.
