I've been installing a back up camera to a LCD screen (I don't have a screen in a mirror nor in my head unit) and wanting to have it work both in reverse automatically and anytime I want to turn it on. I'm using an On-Off-On switch mounting in the blanks next to the steering wheel.
Now, before anyone says "use the search" function, I have been for the past two days trying to prepare myself to install this. I'm by no means great at wiring, but I know I can do this myself, but I've been so freaking stuck it's getting on my nerves. I've seen the thread where someone installed a switch above their rear view mirror, but their screen is built into the mirror and they used a mini switch. I've also been following this one http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/1st-gen-tacomas/255014-backup-camera-install.html and basically followed his diagram. But again, I have a different switch.
I've successfully gotten my camera to work when I switch into reverse, and I've been able to have it work independent on being in reverse, but I have not been able to get it to do both... If that makes sense. I know this probably needs some pictures to help explain, and I'll do that in the morning. But I wanted to go ahead and post this and see if I can get some help. I'd really appreciate it.
Also if your replies can contain some pictures, especially if you're showing wiring, that wold really help me. I'm a visual person and diagrams and pictures really make a difference.
Here's the diagram I've been somewhat following. I did install a diode just as he did. f9617a72e112344392e5c4f1cb2c07c1_be23e358ab1ba1b51a6697a4bcd1ed5b3c5b63a2.jpg
Again, I appreciate your help. I really want to get this working correctly.

Why do you have power on your video line? Yes you need the diode or the backup light will come on with the switch. The video is an output it should not have power going to it

The nav unit in have always feeds power to the camera, if I want to look at the rear camera there's a mod I enter in the head unit and I can see behind me

I didn't make the diagram, so I don't have power going on my video wire.
Mines not a nav unit. It's just a screen I bought for the back up camera.

I also don't have the same switch that's in the diagram.

    So what am I missing?

The switch you have there will work you need to wire it backwards the output should be on the terminal marked supply voltage your reverse wire on one the 12 volt wire on the other it will give you a choice of either on when you want it or on in reverse.
