Pretty much what happened. Kinda sad...19 year old kid who stole it and drove it around for 2 weeks with his kids in the car, smoking weed and eating fast food. He also knocked both side mirrors off and it has some scratches around it. I think it's safe to say he didn't take it easy on it.

It is sad to have your pride and joy stolen by crooks. I must say that would have been nice to not have found it at all. My toys are like my toothbrush to me. I don't trust other other people behind my wheels, (and definitely not a crook) except very few friends/family members.

OP, I hope everything turns out well and this crook has not abused the heck out of your pride& joy.

    ^^^^ This.

I worry about the non-visible damage done by someone who doesn't care for/love the vehicle. So long as the insurance would have covered everything, I too would rather it not have been found (strictly from a selfish POV; not considering the impact to the various industries, etc.).

Thats great you got it back .One of the best ways to prevent it being hot wired is to put a rocker switch tied into the starter or ignition switch hidden under the dash or maybe your glove box or center console so if you have it in the off position no matter what they do it will not start . Just a thought .

Also Op, can you please elaborate on how you think they stole the truck? I'm am blown away that a numbskull 19 year old has the capability to pull this off without breaking a window, or damaging the locks or ignition.

Was the dash damaged or anything? These trucks are crammed to work under there, if you were to "Hot wire" it, if that can even be done to these trucks?

Most of these kind of thefts are done with a Tow truck, flat bed or Repo Type truck, and then the truck is hauled away to be stripped for parts.

I would have to agree with others on here, I would rather it be gone for good as I can't imagine what else they may have done internally to the drive train, the smoke, stains scratches, it's just not the same. Either way I hope evertyhing works out for you that makes you happy!

I had read where one could order a duplicate key simply by recording the VIN # (visible from the front windshield) and calling a dealership. This was a few years back, not sure about security checks from the dealer these days. I would hope they would check identification and run the VIN to ensure the registered owner and person picking up the key are one and the same.

When I worked in Collision repair, we did this all the time, and it was easy to do (But that was over a decade ago) before chipped keys and such. If one were to simply cut a key for a modern Tacoma, they could probably turn on the radio, un-lock the steering wheel, but it shouldn't start the truck??

Not saying this is what happened here, but 9/10 in these situations, the thief has mysteriously found the ACTUAL key. People leave them in the garage or nearby (I'm a contractor ask me how I know this) a lot of times they are even left in the ignitions, unlocked in the garage etc...

Again I don't think this was the case with Op's situation, but often these types of threads are missing detailed info like (Was dash damaged & ripped apart? Was there cut or exposed wiring? Skid marks in driveway from being drug by tow truck with park brake on etc) If not, the thief had access to the actual truck some how.

To be technical someone can only stay in jail up to 2 years. Prison now that's a different story. So yes I hope he rots in jail for up to 2 years.

one reason why I don't have a hideaway. I've found these in vehicles I've bought and a lot of wrecks that came into the junk yard. My 79 bronco, i didn't know there was one behind the bumper till we pulled it off to put on tube.

I know the keys strip down on these style tacomas and 4runners, making it easy for anything that can fit in there to start it. I know of a 03 4runner that you can pull the key out in any position. if you pull it out without locking it, any key that will fit half an inch in there will be able to turn the ignition and it starts. Kinda made me rethink that these aren't able to get stolen, as the only one I know that got stolen here was from crackheads with a minute man lift. There was a tow company here famous for ripping vehicles off and then saying it was parked in a no parking zone. lol

Thanks everyone for the words. I will update this with pics in a second, as well as a detailed explanation of what we know. Unfortunately, I may not have any great insight for you, but I'll share the story.
