I have used this real world for very short trips & carried loads within the weight limit carefully with no issues. Last weekend, we picked up some a few pieces of 14' lumber & this worked great with no safety issues. However I do not endorse it as a replacement for getting large amounts of materials. In those instances I use either my 12' trailer, rent, or get drop delivery when loads exceeded length/weight/general common sense. The service taught me well in 26 yrs on risk analysis & safety first, plus I wouldn't want rebar flying out on the highway

This extender is a couple years old & appears heavier duty than the pic the OP posted but he asked for some numbers so here they are. Again, not endorsing this as a replacement for heavy duty lumber racks but works in a pinch within its limits. As stated, last weekend we picked up some 14' lumber without issues.
Truck is 4WD SB w/ TSB fwiw.
SB Length w/ tailgate down no extender 6' 8"
SB Length w/ tailgate down and hitch extender 8' 3"
Here is just one pic from the ones loaded in the gallery. The load is not tied down & shown for informational purposes only.

That Mod guy is pretty smart....numbers x numbers divided by the rotation of the earth subtracting the average rainfall of the island of Rumboogy and then square that by the population of Moronica......whew....who knew?

Why not just rent a trailer? Maybe Im missing something. Around here you can rent a 24ft trailer for $20 or less a day. I believe HomeDepot and Lowes rent trailers also.

Home Depots around Phx have trucks for rent (if you're buying their stuff). $19 for an hour I think.

Sorry guys...Ive been out with the flu for the past week.

I ended up buying one of the hitch extenders from a local parts store here to see how it would handle a load from lowes...Little more expensive, but worth the extra money in the local economy...

I packed 10 pieces of metal roofing on there 12' long...Used the extra d rings i installed in the front of the bed to tie them down there and tied them down in the back of the bed and on the extender. Stuck out about 4' past the extender.

Had no problems at all...Thanks for all the info...
