Okay, so I greased the rear 3 zerks in my 2013 Tacoma and found the front 2 zerks, but how the hell do you guys get the tip in for those front two zerks? I tried with my flexible hose and adjustable fitting and there was no way to get a good connection to the front zerks. I tried driving the track forward and backward for an hour and still I could not get a good connection. HELP?

Also, I used Grade 1 NGLI grease with no moly. It was a Castrol GP brand. Is that okay or next time should I switch to Mobil One Grade 2? The Castrol is cheap and easily available at Wally World. From what I've read Grade 1 is fine especially if I keep doing the greasing at every oil change.

you can turn the front axle with your hand if it's not in 4wd. you just have to shove the grease coupler up in there. it's tight but it will fit. i did mine today.

I'm going to go give this a try in the dark. If not I'll try ordering the new coupler.

Thanks guys, once I knew I could turn that front shaft it went easy. I knew that shaft didn't turn unless 4WD was engaged (it's locked out by the hubs) but I didn't even think to turn it by hand. I had to take off that dinky little heat guard that protects the transfer case from the exhaust, then the back zerk was easy. The front was simpler.

Anyone have an answer if that Castrol Grade 1 moly free general purpose stuff is okay as far as grease goes?

Of course they “know how to do it.” It’s getting them to actually do it that’s the issue.

The only difference between NLGI grades 1 and 2 is that #1 is a bit thinner. It will be OK, especially this time of year, though #2 will be less likely to sling out of the u-joints in warmer weather. General purpose grease will be fine.

Yeah, this was a few years ago. I’ve switched over to using the correct no. 2 grease now and I use only use Amsoil synthetic grease since I found a cheap source for it locally. Doing it yourself is a great idea over having a shop do it because, like changing your own oil, it gives you an opportunity to check under your vehicle for leaks and other damage that a shop might miss or not really give two shits about. Not that all shops are bad but most techs who do the oil changes and greasing aren’t certified, they’re just hired help.
