So I have read several threads today regarding the installation of interior rockers and switches (such as OTRATTW) in the dash for many different purposes. i.e. lights, etc.
This got me to thinking has anyone used one of the empty spaces on their dash (such as the 3 next to the USB/AUX plug) to install a Homelink system? I don't know if this can be done but I sure think it would look cool.

Thats a good thought but the homelinks that I have seen have quite a bit of bulk behind the buttons. I bought a homelink unit from ebay and installed it into my roof liner behind the center console.

I have seen those and like the idea of placing it there. Most examples I have seen show it installed just behind the drivers windshield visor. Did yours fit well behind the center console?

yup no problems and really easy to install there once you remove the console, and there is switched power really close by to tap into from the console display

I added the 2013+ homelink mirror.
But like you said others add the module with buttons on the ceiling behind or by the driverside visor.
I've seen another out it between both map lights (they extended the wires and make a seperate circuit board to fit between there perfectly)

Easiest & cleanest method IMO is to get a Homelink from a junk yard for ~$20 and cut it into the headliner, splice it into the overhead console for constant power and call it a day. That's what I did anyway. Has worked great for years and I think I'm going to do the same on my mom's car for her that didn't come with one.

that looks just like the unit I bought. I would suggest not using constant power though, if someone breaks your window they can now open your garage door and like most who don't lock the entrance from the garage into the house they can then get int he house.

    1) None of our cars are left outside of the garage, ever.

    2) We do lock our cars in the garage and also lock the door leading into the kitchen as well as disable power to our garage doors at night.

    3) I use my openers enough w/o the keys that owning cars in the past that had Homelink on switched power drove me nuts.

    4) I've got cameras & security so we're good to go.

I guess I could see why you would want this but I can say that most of my vehicles that I bought with factory Homelink all had constant power and these were usually nicer luxury type vehicles and sports cars too. I can think of only one that had switched power on the Homelink and it was the bane of my existence until I got rid of the car... mostly for the Homelink BS. :D

well to each their own, either way its easy enough as both switched and constant are right there in the console.

Agreed. Easy enough for the person installing to choose whichever they prefer... convenience or fear. ;) :D :p

I found an "rig up" online using your garage door opener. Of course I'm always up for a challenge so I went for it. It consisted of your opener, a resistor, and a small timer. It is opens the garage door when I flash the high beam lever. It took me a couple of hours to solder and wire up but it works great. I put the whole setup into a project box and it sets next to the battery. Something to consider if your a DIYer.

Would you mind elaborating on this a bit more? Sounds interesting.

just do a search on "high beam garage door opener". Lots of them are using motorcycles as example but it works the same for autos.
