I just bought a 2011 prerunner 2.7 - 4 cylinder. As far as I can find, there's not to much info on this motor. I know everyone has the 6cyl but for the few that have the 4cyl , chime in on what's working for you as far as the engine air filter-s . AND maybe, if you have any other words of wisdom concerning the 4 cyl. Feel free to post it.

the stock air filter is the best. it lasts a long time before it needs to be changed. probably 25-30K miles.

it's not that expensive to replace either.

nope i haven't and never will. it will keep anything from going into the intake if it were to somehow get past the air filter or debris going into the intake when opening up the box to change the air filter. :D

i've opened it up to check it before and found leaves and stuff in the box. you can just blow it out without worrying about stuff flying into the intake.

No real gains to be had removing carbon filter or aftermarket air filter.

I bought 3 OEMs when I hit 30K for $14.99 each. I've since decided to go with 60K intervals so I'm good til 210K for $45 bucks. I'm at 43K on current filter with no drop in mpg. Filters actually capture a higher % dirt as they get older and I rarely exceed 3000 rpm so no concern if I lose 2 hp at 6000 rpm because of a slightly restricted filter.

As far as Hp gains, not much. You can always re gear it to say 4.56 or 4.88's which may increase off the line performance, but at the expense of fuel mileage. I can tell you these engines are bullet proof though, I've had two Tacomas with the 2.7 and run them hard in a commercial environment and they just take it.
