CV axle and rearend heat questions

    This is my first car....Its a 2012 4x4 sport...I have 2 questions number 1 how hot should the rearend get....I took it for a 90 mile drive you can put your hand on it but it feels hot...2nd how much play should the left cv axle where its goes in the front differential have?...Thanks

    If you can put your hand on it...consider it ...normal. Mechanical components can handle much much higher heat than your own body can. :D

    If you're concerned about it....you should open up the fill plug and make sure there's enough fluid in there.

    What do you mean...by...play in CV axle? What made you think to ask? Was your front end jacked up and you wiggled things around? Or were you driving and heard some noises?

    the driver side inner CV, where it comes out of the diff, has ALOT of play in it from the factory, its almost scary how much play it has from the factory. But it is normal.

    If you expierence vibes in 2wd that go away in 4x4 hi, your vibe is coming from the needle bearing at that location. East coast gear supply has a bushing that fixes it.

    General rule of thumb. If you can touch it without pulling away it is less than 120 F.
