If I buy from one dealer further from my home, is there any problem taking it to another dealer for its service work ? I think I can get the truck a few hundred dollars cheaper at another dealer. Is it worth it ?

I bought mine local from a dealership approx 45 min from me. Take the truck for service to another dealership 10-15 min away. Never had any issues.

    +1, never had a problem.
Always ask to meet the service manager, and start a relationship.

In fact, by LAW they have to...once upon a time, salesmen would tell buyers that if they didn't buy locally, they would have to return the vehicle to the purchasing dealer for service/warranty work, thus resulting is less competition.

Here we buy from neighboring cities, 50+ miles away since they are a few thousand dollars less. At one point, we actually bought a Nissan Versa in Dayton, Ohio for use in Dallas, Texas and saved 30% of the purchase price.

Thanks everyone, I was a little concerned about doing that, thinking I could always pull that card and say " give me a break I bought the damn truck from you" if I had any issues with the truck.

I won't worry about it now. Thanks

Bought my truck from New Jersey and drove it back to Ohio. Get it serviced (obviously) 15 mins from me. Never had a problem.

One thing you could do is use the cheaper price as a bargaining chip for the dealer closer to you and have them come down to at least match price. Or if your feeling sparky you could get them to go lower!

    none yet
I bought mine from a different city for several hundred less than what the local stealership could offer to me. I do my own maintenance Bcuz I have "trust issue" with some kids at the stealership messing around with my truck. Unless it is a safety recall related issue, those kids ain't gona touch my toy.

basically same story in Northern Va. Maryland dealers are limited to about $200.00 in 'processing fees' which is somewhat legitimate to handle loan, plate, title, fedex fees, etc.

However Va. dealers are at $600.00 and climbing seeing these extra fees as a cash cow that far exceeds the marginal labor for a bit of paperwork.
This would require (for me) too much negotiation to get the vehicle I want at a reasonable price and probably would be 'iced' out of the deal (i.e. delayed until they got the price they wanted from someone else.).
So I go to Md. to large internet based dealers with good selection ,etc.
The dealer service dept. i get my work done in Va. knows their new car sales practices are limiting but have their own sales goals.
We'll see; i have two TSB's to get done; the true test!!!!

Yeah i get service at a different dealer than the one i got the truck from. just because the one i got it from is farther away.

not worth traveling just to save a couple hundred dollars. thats if the local dealer doesnt have what your looking for. most times the dealer where you purchase from will treat you better.

^ I disagree, why not drive an hour or two away to save a couple hundred bucks? The closer dealer doing the service work should treat you right, because they are going to want your next purchase to come from them. And they are going to want to do future service work for you also.

There can't be a problem with taking your truck to a different dealer for warranty/service work. Otherwise people who move across the country for a new job or any other reason, right after buying a vehicle, would be screwed.

Bought mine about 30 minutes away and get it serviced locally. Never a problem. They are happy to get the business.

Likely not in all areas, but with the Feds in D.C. and military/civilians PCSing all the time, likely as not a dealers service network will include MANY out of state purchasers, here for at least for a couple years. So non-local buyers are customary in Northern Va. although not all change to local plates.
The internet dealer i use in Md. (statutory limit on processing fees) is actually proud of SET business; SET charges in NC and south are enough to where buyers make a deal, setup their vacation to come to/thru Md. and drive back south with a new ride. I think the fees are also in GST.

I'm about to test this theory, at least with 2 dealerships near me. The one I bought it from is about 30 minutes across town, the one I've gotten service done at is about 15 minutes away.

That being said...I sit here in the waiting room of said dealership for my 10k mile Toyota Care (i.e. oil change), and I've been here for about 1hr 45min (I made an appointment...not walking in). In their defense, I did inquire about the engine knock TSB. When the advisor finally came back to talk to me (after I had been told he was "too busy"...and I called for a manager) he said they test drove the truck to listen for the knocking and they're working on the oil change. If my math is right...they drove the truck for an hour. Ridiculous. Let's see how many miles they put on it during their test drive...

My next service will be done at the dealership that I bought the truck at. We'll see if that has any bearing on service. It could just be the service department here isn't that great.
