I was at the dealer today getting my oil changed in my 2013 TRD Sport Quad Cab Long Bed 4WD. I noticed a new 4.0 4Runner was rated at 270 HP whereas my Tacoma is listed at 236 HP.

Can anyone tell me what is different in the 4Runners 4.0 V6 that allows it to make almost 34 HP more than the Tacoma's 4.0 V6?

Is it easy to make the 270 HP in the Tacoma? For alot less $$$ than bolting on the TRD Supercharger.

    Many thanks, Frank

VVT-i on the Tacoma, Dual VVT-I on the 4runner.

Edit in case you wanted to know what that is.
the VVTI has adjustable timing on the intake cam, whereas on the dual vvti systems it has variable time on both intake and exhaust cams. Not sure why they dont have it on the tacoma, but its in the tundra and 10+ fj's

    Getting there...
Besides a supercharger or turbo, the only other performance mods that seem to make gains require heads, intakes, and the URD MAF calibrator. There's a thread somewhere with dyno charts of people and what they got with what.

My dad's 2010 FJ has noticeably better throttle response than my 2012 Taco. BUT he has to have a special tool to change his oil filter (it's the cartridge type). Think I'd rather have the extra ponies....

Kill, really? I know you didn't mean literally but seriously a 34hp difference is hardly noticeable. While the tech is nice and all, I like the idea of the TRD supercharger over the dual VVTI.

The supercharger just sounds cool when you are getting at it.

No interest in paying another 5k for a super..... The dual vvti is quick drove a new 4runner with one and its noticeably quicker.
