I hope your morning is going better than mine. I left this morning to see a guy stressed out walking around my vehicle. He backed his Dodge Ram into my bumper. She held up pretty well, but the bumper is creased and scuffed, also the paint behind the bumper is scratched from the impact. This is my first time having anything happen in my driving career. I got his info and I'm getting quotes today. I'm on my mobile so I'll upload pictures when I'm home from work. What would you guys do? Dealership? Autobody shop? I've got one quote for $750 (didn't notice paint behind it) and one for $1001 (did notice paint behind it). Both claim a new bumper is needed since it's creased.
Should I touch up the paint myself and keep the extra $250? I don't want it to rust either.

    Opinions? Thanks in advance.

Judging by your link I think we are talking about different bumpers. It was my rear chrome bumper. How much is a plate one you speak of?

It was a POS anyway, surface rust and looks cheap.
Is it possible for them to order me a painted bumper instead of chrome, or does it have to be original? I guess if I take the money I can spend it how I please.

If a shop does it then they usually have to put what was on it back on. If you take the money then take it there then it's your decision what goes on it.

OP: The other party is liable for indemnity. That is, to put your vehicle back to the condition it was before the incident. He owes you for a chrome bumper and damage to the paint. Nothing more, nothing less. What you choose to do with the funds is your business. However, if the vehicle is financed and the other party's insurance wants to be a dick, they may make payment check payable to both you and your lender which means the vehicle would have to be repaired to lender's satisfaction before they would sign off.

So the idiot wants to go through insurance. Is it his choice or mine? Will my premiums increase since I'm a "higher risk" even though it's not my fault? And will I have to pay a deductible? Won't insurance get the crappiest cheapest company to do the work now? So annoyed...

If it's his insurance it will be his premiums that go up. They might try and make you go to a body shop of their choice but anything less than back to original or new is unacceptable or they might just get a quote and write you a check for the amount then boom you replace or don't with said money.

That sucks. Always amazing how people run into parked vehicles.

If he wants to go that route, get 3 estimates. Pick the middle (average). if he says no, report to his insurance carrier. HE hit you. Even if it goes to last resort(your Insurance), it will not effect your rates since it's "not at fault". you will be subject to your deductible if you claim it under your policy. your carrier will get you back the deductible when they subrogate.

I've been a licensed insurance agent for 25 years.

Sorry to hear you got hit.

My $35 1988 Toyota pickup made me a windfall from stupid people hitting it at least 4 times.

One time someone in the Lexus in the suburbs changed lanes intot he side of me and wanted to settle for cash. I said OK, $500 for the fend and bumper and what have you. He said no way he was calling his insurance agent. I got $1200 from.

The first day I had my 1994 out after installing my newly rebuilt motor and replacing everything in the suspension and brakes and fluids and filters so that I would never have to work on it again some dumbass makes a right on red in front of me.

Man was I pissed and ready to kill someone :quickdraw:

And of course the police don't show up in Milwaukee unless there is a dead body and then it is only after 45 minutes later. If ti would have been on the corner across the street the Tosa PD would have been there with 3 squads in 2 minutes.

Anyways the guy didn't think that he was at fault the whole time.

I got $1500 which more than covered the cost of the truck and all I had to do was throw a $45 fender on it but it's the principality of it that still pisses me off.

This is why I don't buy anything nice and regret buying my Tacoma 3 months ago because it is out of my league classwise.

Good luck and you will most likely walk away with more money from the insurance company that any cash he would have offered.

being an old insurance agent. start process by getting those 3 estimates. I've seen too many in same situation. you will give dude estimates and he will say "damn, that's too much, I'll give you x. fuck that route. get 3, if he shrugs, report it to his carrier.

Two reasons. He backed into a parked vehicle; and he would rather pay for several bumpers over the span of his policies than just one up front. Understand?
    Thank you.
