You want to drift a prerunner/4x4?

    Why????

but if this is the case, I'd say go with the trd offroad. They have elockers. Way better than the bs lsd

This... after 90k of abuse the clutch pack in my 08' mechanical LSD was not so happy.

To OP you can always throw a Auburn LSD in a 09+ and deactivate the BS electronics so the brakes stop applying. http://www.justdifferentials.com/AG5420132-PRO-p/ag5420132-pro.htm

Also whatever you buy used - before you pay or drive it off the lot.....have the truck put on a lift and check the rear. Just because the model truck you buy is "supposed" to have this diff or that doesn't mean it does. My old LSD (whole third member) from my 08' is currently sitting in a 2010 on a dealers lot. A member swapped me their ECGS set up third member with ARB RD129 locker before the truck was traded in........ so do proper investigation. Thirds take about an hr to swap in a parking lot.

No harm in drifting in an empty dirt/gravel lot or dry lake bed with no vegetation. Doing the same in a grassy area would not be treading lightly. i.e. don't do this: :D

Thanks for the advice. I'm fine with the auto-lsd if it does what I want, I am not rock crawling and I trail drive like I have open diffs anyway, I was just under the mistaken understanding that all TRD Sports had mechanical LSDs due to what the dealer told me and the one I was looking at. Fortunately I have a lift and I'm taking a close look at the frame of any truck I'm considering. I'd love to buy a new TRD Off Road and get exactly what I want, but the mark up on these trucks is almost criminal. $40k+ Canadian for a new one, almost half that for one just out of warranty. I'd rather save some bucks and just get an SR5 (I hate fake hood scoops) and buy what I want aftermarket.

Just wanted to let you know that the autoLSD is only good to 30mph. After that speed it shuts itself off and you are again an open rear with traction control and VSC. VSC is designed to stop you from drifting.

I assume the VSC is able to be switched off in all 2010+ models? My 2008 v6 Rav4 does not have a button but starting in 2009 I believe they all do. I have to do a little dance with the two brakes to turn it off, it's really irritating.

My 2009 base 2wd 5 speed has a VSC off button. So assuming I turn this off will the truck be able to spin the rear wheels without any electronic aids slowing it down?

Actually, AUTO LSD stays on all the time after the button is pushed (until you push it again or you restart the truck. AUTO LSD is Traction Control without engine regulation.

The VSC goes OFF in AUTO LSD mode to 30 mph, then comes back on above that speed.

VSC is stability control to help you stay on course driving safely if you suddenly steer to avoid something on the road.

AUTO LSD is a 2WD mode useful for those without 4WD, to move out of a stuck... when only one rear tire wants to spin. TRAC helps, but AUTO LSD is stronger to provide better limited slip traction control.

All 2009+ models. You can switch it off (by stopping, and then holding in the button until the VSC OFF light comes on (about 3-5 seconds). It will come back on if you press the button again, restart your truck, or do something dangerous with the truck (like drift/ donuts, etc.) to keep you from spinning out or rolling over!

These are NICE trucks... for long term service... treat them right and they will surpass your expectations. They are not designed for stunts, but for serious driving, trucking or off roading.

AUTO LSD should let you spin away both tires to get unstuck, like posi-traction. VSC OFF will allow one tire to spin more if needed to spin out mud or snow from it.

Of course spinning can also be counter productive, as in sand... when spinning will only sink you deeper in trouble!

On my Rav4 the VSC only kicks in if you side slip the wheels where as traction control (equivelant of TRAC) is what kicks in if your tires are spinning (according to the lights flashing on the dash), but I can only turn both systems off at the same time, not individually. It sounds like if you turn on auto-lsd on a tacoma, then VSC is diabled until the 30mph cutoff, which is pretty much all I want from it anyway.

step 1. buy tacoma whatever model you want
step 2. put the ABS system on a switch.. one wire mod, very easy
    step 3. install detroit trutrac

it will do absolutely anything and everything you want with TRUE very aggressive limited slip. can tell its there on the street but you always have traction. plus great donuts/drifting in dirt or snow. or burnouts!

Yes, that's I would like to be able to do, be able to whip it around on a narrow road in dirt or on the snow instead of doing a 3+ point turn. When you're out on miles of dead end fire roads doing a search it's a handy skill/feature to have. I can accomplish this with the hand brake in my Rav4 of course (with VSC off), but truck makers have never seen the ways of the handy hand brake for some reason. The open diff ranger I had would just do a peg leg rooster tail with one wheel and head for the ditch. I'm taking one for a real test drive this week so I'll figure out how it all performs soon enough.

Good advice, save one thing. I thought that the only model that has the mechanical LSD is the TRD-SPORT from 2005-2009 (like mine) and that the diff is an 8.4" instead of the 8" so that you can't swap out the thirds.
I ask the question because if I can swap out the third, when my LSD bites it, I like options.
