    There is no 'making it work' as it fits fine. Like I said, I've had one for years now. Why they say it fits is beyond me. My guess is that due to a design by Toyota on the Tacoma's tailgate it can be defeated somehow even though it seems to fit as advertised. When I bought it that statement about not fitting the Tacoma didn't exist. I do seem to recall something about a refund/class action lawsuit type thing for those who bought it for a Tacoma and now I see this statement about not fitting a Tacoma even though I've got a Tacoma in my garage with one on it. Putting all of that together is how I arrived to the speculation I made earlier about it not being as secure as advertised on our trucks for whatever reason.
