You say you spent $66 on the new bearing and $20 in pressing fees....

Did you know in most cases where the bearing goes bad it takes the hub out with it?

    Inner seal costs?

    Outer seal costs?

    O-ring costs?

It's cool to do something on the cheap, but not when you skip the most important stuff that keeps you from needing a new bearing in another 3,000 miles.

I would never try and save $100 by re-using the hub and seals, but maybe that's just me :notsure:

I am always happy to answer a question. I recommend the 20 ton press. I had a 12 ton press and the arbor bent when trying to disassemble an old, seized up Tacoma wheel bearing assembly. So yeah, 20 ton is best. This one I have assembles over 1000 units without a problem, and disassembled over 100.

Check my thread in my sig. I offer 12month/12k mile on all of my assemblies from any and all defects. This warranty is from me personally, as the parts that I buy are factory direct, so they have no warranty with them. But I guarantee everything.

LOL! You must be too young to get the humor :p

I was just asking why the 4x2's cost more, that's all.

The 4X2 hubs can be bought all day at your dealer for $160, not $200. Bit of a difference.

The bearings themselves are the same. It is the hub that gets pressed into the bearing that is different.

When i said $200 I was talking about the difference between the assemblies 4x4 and 4x2. If you get the job done like the guy did you will save $100 if you have 4x4 truck and $200 if you have the model 4x2.

The problem though is if the hub itself is reusable. That is what comes up that people have not noticed. The area of the hub where the seal on the bearing rides has a tendency to get damaged when the bearing goes bad in the first place. If the hub is not perfectly flat, and no grooves, then you are fine. What happens though is that a bad bearing allows the seal to press in the wrong area, or even have the seal damaged where it rubs a groove on the edge of the hub. If you put these hubs back in, then many times the grooved hub will damage the seal, and you are back where you started: A bearing that gets destroyed.

Depending on the brand of bearing, the better ones have a dust seal on the bearing itself, but it is not designed for heavy dirt, crud, water, etc. There is a seal in between the bearing and the hub to keep out this stuff, and then for the 4WD units, there is a seal between the CV axle and the steering spindle, which is the back side area of the bearing. All of these work together the best they can to keep out water, dirt, and mud.

About bearings coming off with a bang when pressed. I once had a friend who worked at an auto parts machine shop. He wrapped any bearing he could with an old leather jacket before pressing to contain anything that may go flying off under pressure. Maybe using something like a bell housing blanket drag racers use would work too. I received and installed 2 new front bearing assembly's from Bamatoy1997 and so far with about 500 Miles on them the growling noise I was hearing is GONE. I also replaced the front brake pads and rotors while doing the bearing replacement.

my front drivers side crapped out at 90k, far from abused she leads an easy life..

Last time a wheel bearing went kaput on me was a 70's vintage vehicle. Oh well, otherwise my taco has been rock solid.
