A few months ago I saw a fuel dispenser for the back of the pickup that tapped into the factory tank, made for fueling lawn mowers or other small items. It was well used and didn't have a name on it, the guy told me that he ordered it from an off-road magazine last year, has anyone ever seen one of these?

Sounds like tapping into the truck's fuel tank would be more trouble than it was worth, especially since the standard tank has limited capacity and no reserve. Also, you have to be careful pumping gas due to static electricity. All of the farmers with slip tanks that I know of use them only with diesel, which doesn't catch fire with a spark like gas does. For smaller motors and four-wheelers everyone uses gas cans.

If your slip tank isn't grounded and just sets in the back of your truck you might get a fire filling it too. Several people have started fires filling gas cans that were sitting in the composite beds of their pickups. Here is one example, note that the guy did just about everything wrong that he could have, gas pumps even have instructions on them telling you to not do exactly what he did:

"Slip", "transfer," and "drag up" tanks are great for what they are made for, diesel... As others have said they are not safe for gas and the ones that are are not even remotely cheap and they take up room in the bed of the truck that I don't have to spare.

    Nope, not at all..

Thanks for the post, i like those but they can't be taken on a ferry..

I'm pissed off because I can't find this pump.. Does the pissed off face offend you?

It's not much trouble at all... I'm not worried about the limited capacity or no reserve, for the use I'm trying to use it for its close to the store and you can't take gas cans across the ferry... This system was made for this, had a simple inline "t" that was placed on the filler neck hose and had a suction hose that was inserted into the tank and left in place, a small 5 gpm(gasoline safe) pump mounted to the frame and a small fuel nozzle was routed into the bed and had holder for it.

What this will be used for is fueling up the golf cart that's at our time share beach house, the gas cans would work but I can't leave them there when were not there and i really don't want to have to buy a new gas can every time we go..

I see the problem if you can't take gas cans on a ferry; something like that never crossed my mind as we don't have ferries in Kansas. I never had trouble taking gas cans onto the Port Aransas ferry though, but maybe it's a new law.

Actually, seems like you can still carry a couple of gas cans on the Port Aransas ferry but not at Galvaston one unless they are in a trailered boat.

    http://www.txdot.gov/driver/travel/ferry-rules.html

It might be easier rigging up a pump and spigot if you had a pickup with dual tanks but it might be harder with a Tacoma. Also, do our second gens have a pressurized system? I know that when I changed the fuel filter on my '87 the gas would spew out. Maybe there is something that could be screwed into the gas tank's drain plug?

However, let me state again that gas is downright dangerous, which is why even gas cans are regulated. What I would probably do in your situation would be to get a siphon hose with a hand pump on it and fill a can that I bought locally.

has anyone been able to get a hose into the tank on the 2nd gen? I tried a 3/8" air hose last night, I may have to pull the filler hose and see where the blocker is..

Well so much for that idea. Checking around, it seems that there is an anti-siphon device near the bottom of the Tacoma's fill neck.

This is probably why gas stealing idiots are now just stabbing tanks with a screwdriver.

It's not an anti-siphon device per se, rather it prevents spills during a rollover. Commonly known as a "green ball". In the event that the truck rolls over and is upside down, the green ball will prevent the flow of gasoline, potentially causing fire.

That rollover ball is a pretty good idea. I wonder when they started putting them in? I could siphon out of my '80 and am pretty sure that I could out of my '87 model too. Never tried it with the '03 and '06, however. In EMS I got soaked with gas at many a scene, perhaps it's a bit safer now.

    Strange.....
If you remove the filler neck hose you can slide a hose straight into the tank.. The filler neck hose has no obstructions and the metal down pipe is clear as well but if you conect the three parts nothing will go in.... Lol
