I went to get my oil changed today and with my truck at 30,000 miles, the service guys mentioned that I was due for 4x4 gear box and power steering maintenance. They wanted to charge an arm and a leg for this service.

How important is it that I get this done every 30,000 miles?

If you cannot find it listed as scheduled maintenance in your owners manual, forget about it. If it is listed, forget about it. There is just no evidence that those need to be serviced. :D
