Long story short, my truck wouldn't shift out of park unless I used the override and my brake lights weren't working. I was intermittent at first, then started doing it every time I drove the truck. I found that others were having the same problem on here, and even made a thread regarding it. I followed the advice and checked my fuses, none were blown.

After that, I checked the brake switch near the pedal. I pulled it out (1/4 turn and it comes right out) and pulled the switch a few times. It seemed to be operating like I think it should, so I put it back in and what do you know, it fixed the problem. It has come back a few times since then so I pull it out and replace it and it's fine so I have definitely pinpointed the issue.

My question is, what can I do to keep it from reoccurring? Should it be lubricated at all? Or is it possibly an electrical issue inside the switch?

    Thank you, gents.

Unless someone else knows of a switch problem - I'd say you just got a bad switch and leave it at that. If you are worried , buy an extra and put in in the Glove box,

Yeah, I mean I know I can replace it with a new brake light switch, but I'm more interested in knowing if the one I currently have is an easy fix away from working correctly. Save myself the $30.

Anyone else encountered any issues pertaining to the brake light switch? Should the "button" part that can be compressed have any sort of lubrication? I'm not familiar with them.

So you recall how much you paid? I'm hoping in the $30 range? Yeah, pumping the pedal used to work, but that got old quick so I just overrode it and went with no brake lights. Thanks for the I do and I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one.

Id like to say it WAS around $30 to be honest :D its been awhile, but that sounds right.

just remember, ur brake lights may not be working just because ur touching the pedal. So the risk of being rear ended is multiplied, please be careful

Well it's working correctly most of the time now, if not I get out and pull the switch out and get it to work that way. I was only overriding until I had the time to try to diagnose the problem; pull every fuse in the truck, scour TW for info, etc.

Thanks again, I'll give the dealer a call tomorrow.

When reinstalling the switch what does it
"feel" like when you have the switch at the proper height without actually seeing the rubber stop on the brake pedal?
