Hey guys, first post, I hope this is the right thread...

I have been shopping around at home depot (I got some gift certificates from work) but I can't seem to find a tool box that fits the tacoma bed... anyone have any ideas?? they are all either to short or to long...

If only the gift cards were from Lowe's. I have the Lowe's Kobalt in my truck.
Had it for 7+ years now. LOVE IT.

The front bottom corners are cut perfect for the fender well. And it leaves enough space to still fit lumber and other stuff in the bed and under the box.

What about a chest style box?

I've had this one for five years. It carries a ton of stuff, and I think it looks better than traditional boxes that sit on the side rails.

It's held in place by two studs that come through the bottom of the bed. The studs are secured to the bed by low profile "weld nuts". I have two holes drilled in the bottom of the box, so I just set the box over the studs and hold it in place with wing nuts. When I want it out, I just pop the wing nuts off and lift it up and out.

This is what I'll be doing in the next few weeks since I plan on adding either a bed rack or a soft topper and the tool box would get in the way of that. Good looking alternative IMO

I have the silver kobalt, I like it. I just wish I could make it work with my tonneau :( im thinking about cutting the ends off so it drops in the bed. I wish I had the old lady get me a chest since she got it for me for my birthday

This is the type of weld nut that I used for the stud.'

The stud only sticks up about 1/2" inch, so they don't get in the way when the box isn't there.

I also have a rack I put on the bed. I like the idea of this style box so I can still put my rack over the bed... Thanks for the pic. Looks great! I am a little curious about the wing nuts. Where are they installed? Inside the box? Doesn't that get in the way?

They are in the very bottom of the box. They never get in the way.

As for securing it to the bed. I used J hooks.
I mounted mine like this. But I went INSIDE the the track.

Next I took the front 2 tie down rings and slide them up to the box.
That way the box can't slide back. I even test the box with the tie down ring moved back and the box NEVER moved. I have at least 150 lbs in the tool box. It stayed put.
But I still run the tie downs up against the box just in case.

The only time I had an issue is when 2 big drunk guys sat on the lid and "sank" the box lid in a bit. But that is a different story.
