I have a 2008 toyota Tacoma with the normal lock, unlock and panic button alarm system. The alarm doesn't work from the remote so I basically lock and unlock my doors via the door lock. Of today I noticed the vehicle started when I insert the key and unlock then lock then the park light flashes and couple second after the engines starts and runs until I open the door and touch the brakes then it shuts off. May I remind you I didn't use the remote cause it doesn't work. Can someone please explain cause I'm a bit baffled.

Did you buy the truck used? First gen or second? Factory remote? Sounds like it is equipped with a remote start system. The break is a standard safety cutoff on remote starts. In all my years and exerpience installing alarms I have NEVER heard of it starting with the door locks. Whatever is in there is wired funky or is going bad. Can you do it again and it works everytime you do it?

parking lights are also another standard feature on remote starts. its for safety and to help you locate the vehicle. Guranteed there is a RS installed. The question is why in the world does it start by cycling the door locks. Whoever installed it did something wrong lol.

Look up under the dash for a black box hanging up above the pedals near the steering column with a TON of wire harnesses attached to it. Follow the harness about 6" and you should have 1 or more wires with a fuse on it. Pull them out and that will disable the alarm. This will prevent electrical issues in the future and the possibility of the truck going crazy lol

Thank you will do. Another problem I carried the remote to change the battery and they did and said that it's not the remote because they changed the battery and nothing works. Is it possible the alarm system on the truck itself went bad and if so can it be repaired?

2 or 3 times I would recycle it until it starts but once the vehicle is driven often in one day it's just 1 cycle and it starts.

post a picture of the remote. and if you can find that black box it should have a model number or brand name engraved on it. Post pics and i can help you trouble shoot it. More than likely its an aftermarket remote for the alarm. Clearly the alarm works and has power. Either an important wire got disconnected or more likely the antenna is missing or unplugged. Maybe on accident maybe on purpose. If the antenne is plugged in then thats gonna be hard to toubleshoot without seeing it. But post what you can and ill see what i can come up with

Welcome to TW. most likely you have whats left of a remote start/keyless entry system. You didnt get the remote for the aftermarket system. looking under the steering wheel should reveal an aftermarket box for a viper or other brand remote start system. Maybe you can leave everything hooked up and get a new remote, and have remote start! Bring it to a best buy or other car audio installer to confirm.

I've got s remote start on my Tacoma. Found it out by accident by clicking unlock 3 times in a row on my factory keyless remote.

You might have to program your factory remote to your trucks keyless entry if changing the battery didn't work, there should be a write up on it, it's easy to do.
