Yes, but Toyota had been working on VVTi /DVVTi for years before that and have it perfected. Now Honda is using DVVTi on their cars.

Exactly, Toyota looked at it and decided it won't be a viable solution, so they don't even consider it at this point.

They have been improving on it since they started using it years ago. But it is a simple solution and doesn't need a lot of improving. Other factors are at play in the Tacoma as far as MPG, like drag co efficient, weight etc.

I have been asking the factory reps for years why the Tacoma does not get the DVVTi, and they all say it has to do with cost, and the fact that the DVVTi adds a little HP, but the Runner is heavier and needs that extra HP. Can we see it on the '16? Possibly. Not to mention the tow rating would not go up that much higher because the frame/brakes/shocks etc need to be beefed up, which adds weight and more money. So in the end it is a non-issue. They also quote a safety issue, give a person more power and they tend to go faster. The Tacoma is not a speedster, it is a reliable truck that has enough power to do the job it is intended to do.

I should lock the doors upon entering, but I often forget, and this way if you stop at a stop sign or red light an you forgot to lock your doors it will have done it for you, plus it's unlikely to have someone try to enter your vehicle in your garage

Get rid of the rear leaf springs for some multi-link coil rear suspension like the new Ram.

It has to do with the foot print/wheel base and is a bunch of crap the Feds, (mainly the one in the house) is pushing down our throats. Fleet wide, the vehicles have to meet strict guidelines. The FJ and regular cab Tacoma will no longer be built.

Bahaha! True but If people want a fancy veichle, Mercedes has a bunch of those. I like how simple the engineering in these trucks is. That's part of the reason they are so great for wheeling.

True, but they are also an on road vehicle that would be nice to have modern features, that's all.

How about rear coils, or will that just not work on a pickup?

I wouldn't call it a non-issue. Simply looks like they don't want to beef up the truck (if that is the actual reason for excluding DVVT-I). Cost more money? The redesign is going to cost more anyway, it ought to be upgraded as such.

The extra HP issue-yes, we don't NEED the HP. However, can't a more powerful engine also mean a more efficient one? MPG is something everyone needs, especially with the Tacoma getting passed up lately.

As far as the debate about more modern features vs less stuff to break and replace, I think there is a fine balance between the two. Just because a truck has updated features does not mean it is no longer a work truck too. The things people suggest often have a reasonable function.

You can still get a brand new stripped down Tacoma as a work truck. I sell the crap out of them.
