I'm looking at buying one Taco or another. First one is an 2007 Access Cab, V6 auto, 4x2 Prerunner SR5 with TRD Off Road. 99000 kilometers, $14,900.00 or 2008 Access Cab, V6 auto, 4x4, SR5, TRD Off Road, 141,000 kilometers, $15,900.00. I mostly drive pavement with 70/30 city hwy driving. Is the locking dif on the 4x2 enough for general snow days. I drove rear wheel most of my early years until front drives became popular in the late 80's. Hell we even drove 65 Galaxies and 70 Cutlass's with posi rears all winter too, most times we tossed winter tires on back. So no stranger with that. Idk what's the word on these 4x2 Tacos, anyone buy these or ? Thanks for any feedback and any comments are appreciated.

My last Tacoma was a 4x2 PreRunner. Manual with NO Locker.
It would spin in wet grass all the time unless you had a bit of weight in the bed. It would just spin one wheel and tore the grass up quickly.
I always wished I had the locker option for that reason.

I now have a 4x4 Auto WITH All-Terrain tires. I rarely spin in wet grass EVER.
But hat wasn't the case so much until I got better tires.
The stock tires on the 4x4 trucks are OK at best for anything other than pavement.
My current truck has the Locker but I have NEVER needed it yet. But I've on done light to moderate off-roading.

I guess what I'm saying is, I prefer my current 4x4 Auto over my last truck.
And TIRES make a HUGE difference.

Can you get by with a 4x2 - yes

The real question is why would you want to.

    Agree about the tires also

Goodyear Duratrac's - its a all terrain tire that is actually Snow Rated.

See picture to the left for use

Most regret not getting the 4x4. That will help you in the snow more than the locker.

15k for something with 149k miles seems over priced.

But i always buy 4x4 for the just in case I need it. Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it

i'd go with the 4x4. They are really great in the snow.

I would never own a truck that isn't 4x4. A truck should have every advantage it can to be able to go as many places it can . Sometimes 4x2 won't allow you to go to those places.

    Just my opinion.

He posted 141,000 kilometers. That's about 87K miles.

    And OP, I'd get 4x4.

It's in kilometers. A kilometer is .62 of a mile.

A thousand dollars more for 4x4 sounds more than reasonable... at least in US dollars.

Thanks for all the replys folks and looks like all it would take is to be stuck once and then the wishing would begin. I'm going to go 4x4 as for the extra $1000 and only 40k something more kilo's I'd rather not be stuck at -30 temps.

4X4 is a necessary evil for those that don't off road a lot.
You carry that front axle around all year and may never need it.

It sure feels go though when you do need it,throw that switch and walk right out of most situations....or help someone else outta a situation.

a truck without 4x4 is like taking a dump without toilet paper. its kinda pointless. thats just my 2 cents...
