Well I've done some searching and reading but haven't quite come across the answer I'm looking for.

I'm looking at buying my first truck. 2005+ Tacoma, double cab, long box, 4x4, V6. The truck will be my daily driver but I want it to be capable to do some mud chewing and crawling.

The one I'm currently looking at is a 2006 with 232200 km, TRD Sport, for $15000 CDN.

Now I've heard these trucks run for forever, but are the km high for the year? I heard average is 20000 km/year so that'd be around 160000 km for an 06? How many more km can I expect from it? Is it worth putting money into? I'd like to get a 3 inch suspension lift with 33 inch tires and some nice wheels along with a steel winch bumper and maybe rock sliders. Is it worth it?

First month of ownership... This month I'm removing front air dam, and also Rhino lining the bed.
Who knows??? Best bet is probably to look it up in Kelly Blue Book www.kbb.com

They do a good job of providing a baseline value for vehicles based on year and mileage and is the primary way resale values are determined.

It's not so much the price I'm worried about im more asking if the kilometres are high for the year.

I would say that the milage on it is reasonable for the year and as long as the PO kept up with maintenance it should last you along time.

Anyone else have their 2 cents they want to throw in? If it's worth putting in money for 3 inch lift on 33s?

I have bought a lot of used vehicles over the years. High mileage (or kilometer-age) for the age does not bother me so much because that tends to mean lots of easier highway driving. But not always. Can you talk to the owner, or is it at a dealer? I really like to talk to the owner because you can get a sense of stuff like that. Also, people who sell a vehicle themselves may have more faith in it than those who trade in at a dealer, so I think about that too. All of these are just things to kick around in your head because one thing that's true 100 percent of the time is that when you are buying a truck with more than 200,000 km, the previous owner has more influence on what you're getting than brand name or just about anything else.

Of course, you want to inspect (or have inspected) the frame to ensure it isn't rusted.

To me the price seems a little high. I used Kelley to check the private party value and got US$12,500 and change, so add $1,250 or so to that for currency conversion and you get CAN$13,750. Even at that you're paying what seems to me to be a big price for a truck in which the useful life is in all likelihood over half gone.

    Just a few thoughts.

It is a private seller. The seller had it inspected,

"The mechanic said the truck was sound, no rust and was in great shape.

He found that the muffler had a small hole in it (it is not making any noise, is quiet) but it will need to be replaced and that the air filter should be replaced. Other than that, everything was good.

He just mentioned that in the future, it will need front brake pads and calipers (still have 60% pads left now), he said he would not replace them until the brakes needed doing in the future.

We paid for the inspection, we will have the oil changed and the air filter replaced. Muffler didn't need replacing right away, but we told him to get it anyways as it had a hole, and the muffler was ordered yesterday."

And here's a link to the ad,

    http://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/nanaimo/2006-toyota-tacoma-pickup-truck-must-see/1019613544

Also comes with a hard tonneau cover not shown.

Maybe translate the Canadian figures so you can get some easy feedback from the lower 48? It is funny you give a lift and tire size in inches... No worries, I will multiply the kilometers by 0.62 for you:

"I heard average is 20000 km/year so that'd be around 160000 km for an 06?"

In miles: I heard average is 12,400 miles/year so that'd be around 99,200 miles for an 06? (Even or rounded off to 12,000 mi./ yr., 100,000 miles for an '06).

My reply would be why look for a truck that old on purpose. What's special about an '06? I had an '05 and put 102,000 miles (164,500 kms.) on it in just 4 years! Got a 2010 Off Road 4WD... and it is the most awesome truck, ever! Tacomas are made to be driven... hard to go wrong with them.

I'm not purposely looking for a truck that old just looking for a second generation Tacoma double cab long box, SR5 or TRD Sport 4x4 V6. I'm tight on cash at the moment but I need a truck asap. More so what I'm asking is if I run this thing till it dies will I atleast get a couple years out of it? I am however looking at getting a newer one with less km down the road.

If you're planning on doing a lot of offroading, you might look into the TRD Offroad rather than the Sport. It's a bit more tailored to the offroad crowd and also comes with a locker. Only trade off is that they don't come in a double cab long bed. Only a short bed double cab.

But you could always add in a locker later on down the road even if you get a sport. Toyota's go forever so you'd get plenty of years out of it.

I do plan on doing some off-road but nothing too crazy I think the limited slip differential will be enough for my to get by on until I buy a newer truck down the road. Just some trails and a bit of mud chewing. I'm leaning towards the sport because Im liking the idea of subs behind the back seats but a longbox will be more useful for me.

It's a very good looking truck - I checked out the ad. Sounds like you have checked it out well, and I am sure you have looked around enough in your area to see what they're going for, price-wise. I think this truck would last you many years, assuming you take care of it, which I am sure you will given that you have put effort into checking it out.

Here's the only other thing I can think of that you might still want to consider: If you're going to modify the truck, then why pay a premium price for a factory custom like a TRD? Why not get a more plain truck and have a few extra thousand in your pocket to use for your mods? That's not a statement phrased as a question, it's an actual question, because you may have a good reason for wanting the TRD. But it's just something maybe to consider.

I don't really care for the TRD honestly, I would settle for a SR5 V6. It's more on available trucks at the moment. This is the cheapest one in my whole province at the moment for a double cab long box. Been searching for months now and watching what's around. The next cheapest one even worth looking at with lower km is a $5000 jump.

On the other hand if I were buying new id just get the SR5 V6 and have more money for mods like you said.

i bought my 07 with 133,000 miles on it. i paid 15k for mine and it's a great truck. very solid and i don't see any reason why it won't last 200k miles or better without any major problems.

mine runs and drives like new.
