How much would you pay for my truck?

    Another "what's it worth thread", but a little different this time. I'm going to be putting my truck up for sale in the next 6 months or so, and wanted to gauge the market for it given it's condition and history, since it's hard to go on KBB or NADA and price for that. Basically, I want to know what you would think is a fair price if you were in the market for a Tacoma like this and saw mine for sale. We all know what the pricing websites say, so please don't tell me to go check on there, because it probably doesn't totally work for my situation. So, here goes...

    * 2009 DCSB Sport 4x4 w/ 132,000 miles
    * Factory tow package
    * 2nd owner, owned since 6,000 miles (so basically 1 owner). I can essentially tell you everything that's ever happened to the truck.
    * Body, paint, interior, and mechanical are all excellent condition.
    * "Extras" include perforated leather interior, TRD exhaust (>2,000 miles), FJ wheels, roof rack.
    * Tires are approximately 70% tread remaining (265/70/17 Dyanpro ATm)
    * Recent mechanical work: New Bilstein 5100s, new OEM UCAs, brakes (pads and rotors front), brake fluid flush, power steering fluid flush, radiator fluid flush. All diff and transfer case fluids changed regularly, oil every 5,000 miles w/ full synthetic, and all other filters are brand new. It truly does run like it's brand new.

    Now, the backstory: In June 2014, the truck was rear-ended, doing about $11,500 in damage. I have all receipts for the work, and the truck was repaired at one of the top auto body shops in Denver. Parts replaced include the rear bumper, hitch, right bedside, and front passenger headlight and fender (and inner fender/wheelwell), along with the grill and bumper in the front. THERE WAS NO FRAME DAMAGE. The truck was put on a frame machine (by 2 places, because I'm OCD about that stuff), and both found no movement in the frame. The repair bill was higher because I demanded and received all brand new, OEM Toyota parts during the repair, so the fit and finish is like factory. You would not know it was wrecked if I didn't tell you, unless you had experience looking at body work.

    Then, in August 2014, the truck was stolen. As a result of the theft, both side mirrors were damaged, and the new rear bumper was nicked where the thief backed into something. Because the damage was so slight, I chose to not replace the bumper, but the side mirrors were replaced with OEM color matched Toyota mirrors. Additionally, the interior was filthy. It was professionally detailed (twice), and I was able to convince insurance to replace the headliner and carpet, which I personally installed. The passenger side seat bottom leather was replaced due to slight damage. All other leather looks brand new, as it did before.

    So, there's the story. I've attached some pics so you can see the truck now and get an idea for it's condition. Any more questions about the wreck or theft and their damages, please ask. I'm really trying to get an idea of what this thing is worth, considering that it has a less than perfect history in the past 6 months, but before that was absolutely babied and is probably one of, if not the, nicest 2009s you can find with this kind of mileage. For example, my mechanic said the frame is the nicest he's ever seen on a Toyota with this mileage, and he estimates the "mechanical wear" equivalent to that of a truck with about 50-60,000 miles on it. It really is a cherry truck. So, any feedback?

    Does "theft" show up on Carfax or the other history searches? That, plus the crash, would adversely affect resale for sure. I think I might be inclined to not disclose the theft and recovery if it isn't listed on a vehicle history report. You're already going to take an unfair beating on the crash damage regardless of how good the repairs are; no point in getting even more beat up over something that isn't really significant to the resale transaction, anyway.

    That said, I don't have a number to throw at you, but the truck looks good and is obviously super clean. I can't imagine you'd have too hard of time selling it even with the crash damage disclosure.

    Good shape, shame about the accident though. What are the internet sites saying it's worth?

    I haven't looked at the CarFax since the theft, but the wreck was not reported. If I trade it in, I probably won't disclose either. Maybe shady, but it's not like the car lot is going to go out of their way to inform the purchaser that it has incidents if they aren't on the CarFax. If I sell it private party, I'll be 100% honest, because I wouldn't feel right hiding information from someone on a personal level. Besides, I would think my honesty would buy me some credibility from the purchaser that the rest of what I'm saying is true.

    NADA has it about $24k trade in, which I was offered by the local RAM dealer before the wreck/theft. KBB, significantly less at about $18k private party. In reality, if I do a CL and cars.com search of 2009s equipped like mine with similar mileage, there is nothing under $20,000, and definitely in not as good of shape.

    I was hoping to ask $18,000 for it, basically. I don't want to be overpriced, but I also don't want to give the thing away because of a couple incidents which were 100% corrected with factory, OEM parts. And obviously the condition of the truck in general warrants closer to top dollar than bottom dollar.

    I'd just trade it in personally. The truck being wrecked and stolen will make buyers leery--I know it would me make think more than once. Dig up any and all paperwork of the repairs for both the wreck and the theft, and I would consider paying for a buyer's inspection for anyone that's seriously interested in the truck if they want to buy it at whatever your asking price is.

    Sold! When can you pick it up? For a pack of gum I can deliver anywhere in the continental US. :)

    In all seriousness, thanks for the input guys. I'd love to hear more opinions if they're out there.

    I'd get a carfax to see what shows up. If theft or accident shows, trade it. I personally wouldn't buy a car that has been stolen, wrecked or both. Too many good ones out there.

    Let me ask you this - would you prefer to buy a car that has a history like mine, but full receipt and maintenance history showing everything was repaired properly at a discounted price, or an unknown used car with 100,000+ miles at full blue book?

    If that was an open question to anyone, I would say "yours".

    The only thing that would make me leary is the not knowing what was done to the truck while it was stolen. Major engine, transmission, transfer case abuse can be caused by some one who doesn't give a shit about the vehicle they are driving.

    Always someone looking for a good deal. I sold a truck with 140k and a bad transmission in 2 days. Had 6 eager buyers, price it at a fair value for the condition and history and there will be a buyer.

    I wouldn't buy either one. But that's me. There's plenty of buyers for each. As I stated, spend $19.95 on a Carfax, see what shows up and price it accordingly.

    It was an open question, and I appreciate the response. Totally agree with you on your worries. I had everything checked thoroughly by a Toyota 4x4 mechanic. It all came back perfect. When I list it, I will provide a receipt showing what was reviewed and what the mechanic found. I got lucky in that regard.

    Totally agree...I think if priced fair, the market will be there. I really appreciate your guys' input!

    I understand what you're saying, but I'm not gonna lie to a buyer and say the truck is something it isn't, regardless of the CarFax. To me, CarFax is a joke.

    Question, aren't auto body shops required to disclose repairs of x amount?
    If not, excuse my ignorance. If so, why would it not be reported?
    Carfax may be a joke but, wouldn't a dealership run one on a significant trade in? I would assume most private party buyers would as well at this price point :notsure:.
    Good luck with sale.

    I just traded a 2010 TRD DC 2WD with 190,000 miles on it, for a new 2015 same except 4WD. DO NOT go by KBB for trade in or private party sell, on a Toyota Tacoma. The Tacoma is a rare vehicle. People will pay MORE than it is worth, because the Tacoma is a DEMAND vehicle which means people want them. Tacoma is one of the FEW vehicles on this planet that there is no manufacture incentives, because they are not needed to sell the product. I put mine on craigslist at 1K over KBB private party. Within 24 hours I had multiple cash on the spot offers of 5-6K over KBB private party. The next day, I was at a local Toyota dealer just to see what a 2015 was going the cost me, and obviously they wanted to appraise mine and make me an offer, so I let them. They came back from the appraisal and said that the rear axle had some serious problems, they gave me my keys and encouraged me to take it to a local mechanic I trusted and get a second opinion. So I sat and talked with them a while and their offer of trade in value was still 3K over PRIVATE PARTY sell value, they discounted the new 2015 about 3,800 and made my payoff of my trade of 1,600. In reality, I know that they played a numbers game with me and they made money. I'm pretty good with numbers so I came home and went through their offer no less than 50 times, and I feel like I got a fair deal. I'm saying all that to say this, "don't sell yourself short for your Tacoma". It's worth more than you think, even with the issues you have had. Now I am in Alabama, and the demand may be higher here than in Colorado. Just do your homework, and don't leave any money on the table. Good Luck!
