I changed my rear LSD diff tonight. i found these washers in the drain pan after i filled the diff. i didn't add any washers when i tightened the drain bolt...

Does anyone know if i have to have washers??

I also added a 6 oz bolt of additive. with the additive i only got 2.6-2.7 quarts of diff oil before over flowing ( i waited an hour and still couldnt add anymore).
Does anyone know if this is normal?

Looks like the sealing washers from your fill and drain plugs.

You should have noticed it leaking by now unless your very very lucky

Definitely looks like the sealing washers! With the diff cold and a second set of hands around you can pull the drain plug and put your thumb on it while someone else puts the washer on the plug...reverse the process to put the plug back in and you should not lose much gear oil. You definitely need to have those washers in there!

The drain plug will most likely leak without the crush washer in place.

Why 2 washers? I've only ever seen or used one crush washer on my cars/trucks.

    Update:
I went ahead and changed the crank case and front diff. I made sure to keep track of the washers for both. I noticed the front diff has a copper washer for the drain plug and the fill plug had washers like the pic i posted. Any thoughts?

I havent replaced the rear diff washers, keeping an eye out for leaks.

.... put the washers back in place.... dont just "keep an eye out". thats the only spot those 2 washers can come from.

Just catch the oil that comes out when you remove the drain plug, change the washers and put the oil back in. You will lose a lot more oil while driving, because it heats up. I wouldn't take the risk.
