Hello all. Name is Jon. Live in southern Indiana. Just picked up my new Tacoma a few months ago. Its a 2014 prerunner with the 4.0 V6. Trd Sport packaged. 5spd auto.

I have a little over 2800 miles on the truck and decided to check my fuel economy with a little trip. I filled up before hand in town and drove to Louisville and back. 234 miles round trip. Tank was near empty.
Filled tank again at 16.24 gallons. Now that equals out to 13 mpg.:(
Why am I not seeing the 23mpg everyone else is getting?
I was using cruise and had it set at around 80mph.
Any and all help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
This is my first brand new vehicle. I bought it with 10 miles on the odometer. Is this some normal break in thing?

Going over 60 kills it that much?
Around here and most of my driving is on I69, which has a 70mph speed limit. Most everyones rolling 80.

Ok maybe 23 was to high, but many websites say a 2wd AC Tacoma v6 should be getting near 20. 13 to me is a long enough jump from 20 to have me asking. I understand its not an aerodynamic machine, but some people of fuelly.com are averaging 19/20 mpg.

Yup. Tacomas are aerodynamically equivalent to a loaf of bread.

My mph started to go up after i got about 3500 miles on the truck. I guess it started to finally get broken in around that time. I average about 19.5 to 20. I use 93 octane and usually run about 68/70 on the fourlane. Mine is a DCSB 4.0 V6 4x4 auto.

When I first got my new 14 tacoma I was getting horrible gas milage around 13 to 14. It has slowly been going up ever since then Im at about 17k miles now and I never get below 20 mpg best tank i got was 23 mpg. I would say just keep and eye on it and calculate every tank you should see it slowly go up. My commute to work is about 35 mins long half the time driving at about 80 mph and the other half at about 65.

Now that's more what I was expecting to see MPG wise. Apparently mine has yet to cut its teeth so to speak. Ill watch it and see how much of a difference there is if I cut back to 70mph.
I know the truck is a brick. That's not why I bought it. I bought it to be a truck. I didn't expect it to get prius fuel mileage. Was only confused as to why it seemed so low. Thanks guys.

That's going to make a difference. I lose a couple mpg with corn syrup gas. Do you have access to pure gas so can run a tank and see what your mpg is?

Anything over 68 in these truck crushes the economy. I would go so far to say, the Tacoma is a great short trip truck, but a commuter it is not and has never been. Like what has been already said, the aerodynamics of these trucks is horrible, but Toyota gave us excellent clearance, with a focus on Off-road capability over fuel economy (And I'm grateful for that)

If you want a truck, and care more about fuel economy. You want a 2wd F-150, EcoBoost with super tall 3.15 or 3.31 axle ratio. You will see over 20's easily with that.

I can consistently get 19-20 in my '14 DCLB V6 SR5, If I keep the rpm's below 1500 :) and drive like an old fart.
