I searched and didn't see much discussion on regular cabs being discontinued with the 2015 model year. Has there been any official reason why Toyota did this?

This. Not making the RC makes Toyota more money and makes it easier to meet future MPG requirements. I was a no brainer. For those die hard two useful seat enthusiasts you can order an AC without the jumper seats now .

    Oh, and rock on brothers.

Maybe it's been covered, but how does the RC being killed make it easier to meet MPG reqs?

The CAFE standards are partially based on how long the vehicle wheel base is. The smaller the wheelbase the higher the new mpg requirements will be. So by eliminating the shortest wheelbase entirely the mpg requirement the Tacoma will have to meet under CAFE is lower and thus easier to achieve for the entire Tacoma line.

I know what you're hinting at though. It makes no sense to eliminate the lightest vehicle to get better mileage. What does make sense to Toyota is making the entire Tacoma line longer on average to cheat on CAFE requirements. Especially since the RC was not a huge seller or money maker for Toyota.

Makes way more sense then. You're right, I didn't know how the smallest, lightest Tacoma would be the one to kill for better MPG.. lol.

Regular cabs aren't huge sellers in the full size truck market either, I wouldn't think. Mostly work trucks and fleet vehicles, but probably 80% of the work trucks in my area are extended cabs, only the city government trucks where I live are regular cabs. Even our regional parks department drives access cab Tacoma 5 lugs.

It's just a different market than what it was back in the 80s.

More ass-backwards ideology by our Gov't. So it effectively forces the buyer who would have otherwise purchased a less polluting and slightly more fuel saving 2.7L truck with a smaller footprint, into a more polluting, and gas guzzling 4.0L V6, with a larger footprint.

Ford did the same, killed off the 2.3 Ranger (our work truck '11 Ranger, 2wd, 4.10 gears, auto, Scab, got 29 mpg easily) this automatically pushed the consumer into the more fuel consuming, and more polluting F-150.

You can still get an AC with a 4 banger and no rear seats. I'd hazard the mileage with it is only 1-2 mpg worse than a RC, but I get your point too.

I had a 2007 Ford Ranger Sport 4x4 Extended Cab. I loved that truck. Too bad someone I'm no longer associated with made me trade it in on a more efficient commuter or I'd still have it probably :(.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I'm honestly surprised they lasted this long. Regular cab trucks haven't been popular since the 80s, everyone wanted 4 doors and extended cabs by the time the 90s came around. I personally hate regular cabs because I'm too tall to ride in one comfortably, (seat doesn't go back far enough) but despite that, they look good. Would love it if they had a V6 option too.

That said, I love my double cab and wouldn't have it any other way. Maybe someday I'll find an older Tacoma or Hilux regular cab and use as a toy but for sure not a daily driver. But they would make for a good wheeler because of that short wheelbase.

    singlecab 4 lyfe

But seriously, look, this is not some government conspiracy. They sell a lot more of the access/double cabs. I'm glad I got my truck but if I had it to do all over again I'd probably go doublecab (I have a wife and a large dog and neither one wants to ride in the bed for some reason). Wouldn't have been that much more and could still have my precious 2.7 (yes, you can even on the DC).

BTW, if you've got to have a Toyota singlecab, you still can. Tundra.

True, but appears only available with a 8-foot long bed and V8.

It's the combination of a change in laws and the sales numbers that are killing off the regular cab. CAFE was just the straw that broke the camels back, so to speak.

The smaller wheelbase on the reg cab makes it easier to park, smaller turn radius makes u-turns a breeze. This is my 2nd reg cab Tacoma and unfortunately my last Tacoma. A larger truck will not fit in my garage. :(
