It's worth between 18 and 21k right now. I should be able to find a nice used 4.0 double cab once I sell it for that.

Take it from someone who came from a 2.7l... the V6 is a massive difference. Especially if you tow anything.

Yeah that's what I've been told. Like I said, I regretted not getting the V6 as soon as I drove off the lot and headed up the first mountain pass lol. Drives me crazy about the 4 cylinder, the slightest hill kicks the cruise control off and you have to downshift and floor it to keep the speed up to make it. Will be nice just being able to turn the cruise on in the 4.0 and never have to worry about it shutting off on hills. The passing power will really be nice, passing with the 2.7 gets scary at times. I have to make sure I have a good long shot ahead with a clear view before I try to pass a semi.

I'd really like to have remote start too for cold days, can't have that with a manual transmission! Since the truck will be parked outside my bedroom window, I can just wake up and start it and let it warm up while I stay cozy in bed for another half hour. :)

    X2, had a '14, DCSB PreRunner 2.7 & now back in a '14, DCSB, TRD/OR 4x4, 4.0L.

The difference is tremendous. While the 4.0L is no economy queen, you will appreciate that you won't really be giving up much fuel economy for the extra power.

That was my biggest complaint with my 2.7L PreRunner, I let my inner practical side tell me when I bought it, I would be saving all this gas. I gave one of my employee's my 2010, 4.0 PreRunner and tracked fuel usage between my '14 2.7 PreRunner and his '10, 4.0 V6 (Both DCSB) and it was always within spitting distance of the two.

That said I kept telling myself why am I forcing myself to hog the slow-lane with the VW vans, big rigs and delivery truck's, when I could of had the 4.0L in the first place.

Put up with it for 4.5 months, then said eff-it, and went and got what I wanted in the first place, couldn't be a happier camper.

Don't be fooled about the 4.0L just being able to stay in one gear and cruise right up a mountain pass, with the cruise control on. Trust me the 1GR has more than enough power, it's the crappy way the cruise control works on pretty much all Toyota's.

If you it a mountain pass in cruise with the 4.0, it will still kick-down violently and race the motor (I don't know why for the life of me it's programmed this way) But after owning six of theses trucks, 4.0L & 2.7 they both behave this way.

The 4.0L will be a fair bit more resistant to smaller or lesser hills, but will still kick down violently (or unnecessarily) on anything 2% or greater. Makes no sense, as when I climb the same grade without cruise control the truck doesn't break a sweat (even with a 500-600 lb load in the box).

Yeah, I know that, I was just saying it wont kick the cruise off like the 4 cylinder does which is annoying. Probably because it's a manual transmission, I don't think any automatic will kick it off.

What should I look for in a used 4.0 double cab? If I could buy new, I would, but that is out of the question right now. But, I am very confident in used Toyotas if they are maintained.

It would recommend to sell yours out right and then no worries of them screwing you on the value of your truck.
I just purchased a 2009 TRD Sport 4x4 DCSB, 4.0 with 55K miles, it's gray metallic and automatic it has a 3 in. lift with leveling kit and airbags and It also has a color matched Snugtop canopy. It's an awesome truck and very fun to drive.

If you don't mind, how much did you end up paying for it? That's the mileage I want for mine.

My friend has a Black 2008 TRD Sport 4x4 AC and he hates it especially when he's parked in between two cars and has to load groceries or other things because you have to open the front door first before you open the access door and it's impossible to get the shopping cart in between to unload it.

Personally, I would look for something with low mileage, complete maintenance records and minimal aftermarket parts. You want, after all; to customize it yourself.

I feel pretty much the same. Wife and I are retiring soon and planning a road trip through the west. We've decided to upgrade from the 2.7L/5spd to something with the power to lug it's way over those passes, while carrying our equipment.

I'm really surprising myself as well that, after 40 years of driving ONLY manual trannies, I think I'm ready for an auto. I would never have thought that possible.

Same here, I used to be all about manuals but have really come to appriciate autos for daily driving. Sticks don't make for a good daily driver, it gets old fast. For a weekend car they are great, but a daily driver, give me an automatic any day.

Well, guys, I found my double cab! It's a 2004 with only 75k miles on the clock, 20k more than my access cab has. Going to get it this weekend! Meanwhile, my 2011 will be going to its new home on Thursday, it's been sold to a gentleman in Spokane. Anyway, here's the 2004, going from second gen to first! Think I will like the compact size of this one better.
