    Just doing the change now. See how it goes. Did the flush instead of the simple drain pan change. Still won't know if it's a simple top up or something more serious till I get on the highway and heat things up.

    I know with engine oil they can tell what components are wearing by analyzing the fluid and seeing what metal particles are in it. They can probably do the same with tranny fluid.

    Finished the drain and fill. Took over 30 minutes in 30*F to get it to correct temp. Did the check drain to dribble and now taking it for a rip out and about.
    So far seems okay. Haven't tried any hard shifting in it to see if it slips. The real test will be the highway.

    Haven't yet. Checked the coolant level when at optimal temp. Level was smack dab in the middle.
    I'll be keeping a close eye on it. I also throw in 1/3 bottle of Lucas transmission fix.

    Ripped around town kinda hard to see if I could stress test the tranny. No issues. Kinda feels a little sluggish. Might just be me though.
    See what my mileage is later. If it's sluggish that'll tell me.
    I'm keep you guys posted as to the codes too.

    you should actually have both radiator fluid tested for ATF and transmission fluid tested for coolant.

    you are likely to find no visible or 'simple' problems when systems are not running and not pressurized.

    ^True enough. That was my thought as well. I've saved the fluid from the tranny and it's easy enough to drain some from the radiator if need be. I found a place in Calgary that does it, so I just need to contact them regarding pricing.

    I have seen a lot of transmissions get damaged from antifreeze in the oil .With this said , the transmission fluid is very visible within the rad . Usually the first thing you see when you open up the rad cap is oil floating around on top of the antifreeze .I am certain even a small leak would show the same results . Regardless , it wouldnt hurt to send a sample to the lab .
    As far as overheating goes , there are a couple known issues with the valve body on higher mileage units you may want to look at before things get worse .
    Gonna call it out and recommend you get your valve body overhauled .

    Edit : considering your temp light was coming on at highway speeds ,I would suspect this could be the problem . You didnt have any trouble codes stored in the ecm memory so we must assume the issue is mechanical at this time http://www.sonnax.com/parts/1784

    Didn't see any tranny fluid in the coolant nor on the outside of the coolant reservoir where it might have spilled out.

    That being said, would it be prudent to get an AM Tranny bolt on rad seperate from the engine coolant rad?

    Additionally I'm guessing that Zip Kit isn't a 3 hour afternoon project hey?

    About 3 hours for a seasoned technician to install the zip kit and with a guess here, 5 hours for someone who has never done one . All instructions come with the zip kit .Last time I priced out the zipper , it was $300
    Its mostly remove and replace work and having a clean workspace to do the job

    please resolve your coolant loss and transmission overheat issue first

    but yes if you want to add an external tranny cooler and bypass the heat exchanger just be sure to set it up correctly and watch the temps (scanguage will do it) yotatech 4runner forums have a ton of info as well as tacoma forums

    you don't want a homebrew solution getting too cold in winter or too hot in summer.

    when you go full external you now have to worry about how it actually cools which can be it's own little engineering puzzle to straighten out. just a switchable fan may be all that is needed

    I should mention that the coolant overflow and the transmission hiccup were about 6 months apart.
