I was on my way to work yesterday and a stone put a small crack in the lower passenger side of my windshield. I have a company lined up to fix the crack, but I have since read that it is recommended to have the windshield completely replaced due to the location of the crack. Has anyone heard of it not being a good fix close to the outside of with windshield? Also what type of glass does Toyota use? If I have to have it replaced I want all original Toyota OEM windshield and parts.

No fixing a crack just wait soon it will be 6" long. Probably cracked close to the parked wiper blades. Between two Tacoma's I have had 5 windshields. I would not recommend SafeLite.

Just the essentials and no extra fluff.
Go look at the glass. There should be a decal that says who the mfr is. PPG made the windshield for my last car.

Take it to the glass shop of your choice, tell them you want OEM Glass and nothing else.

    Done.

I had a rock cause instant cracking last year from a dump truck going the opposite direction. There was no saving it or waiting with winter coming. Local shop replaced with Pilkington glass and I'm satisfied with it a year later. Only cost me ~$250 if I remember right.

Pilkington was reccommended to me by a buddy of mine who knows a good glass guy. If you stop drill and fill a small crack properly, it should last a while. I'm on my third windshield on my '06 Taco. Right now its got a stop repair on the 4th that has been doing ok for about 6 months now.

Check with your insurance. In MA, there is no deductible for glass as long as you have comprehensive coverage.

J.N. Phillips has done all of my windshields when I've needed them and they have used OEM glass without me saying anything, but they are just in New England I believe.

As stated above: If you drill through the end of a crack and fill it, It will stop and not spread.

    safelite sucks.
use them if you would like your windshield aperture to start rusting out 3-5 years form now... a sample of their fine work on my old truck...

Thanks for all the replies and info! Finally ended up finding a company that is going to replace everything using OE parts from Toyota. The owner is going to get the parts from the dealership. Insurance gave the company the go ahead to get all OE parts. Should be getting it replaced on Tuesday as long as one of the local Toyota dealerships has the glass in stock. Keeping fingers crossed all goes well. Once again thanks for all the replies!

Do they add a new trim around the windshield? I remember on my other car they used a cheap cut to fit piece.
