The new Taco could use a higher horsepower engine. It needs a diesel option, six speed auto trans, larger wheels for increased aftermarket tire choice, greater wheel well clearance, much better rear leaf springs, much better cargo management system, more robust skids, a freaking bed light in the 3rd taillight already, better quality sound system, and a more up to date interior and electronics. Probably a couple more things I can't think of ATM. Yea, Taco needs a new generation. Badly.

Can't wait for all the 'remember how good the 2nd gen Tacomas were?' once the next gen comes around, stuffed with electronically controlled this, that, and everything else...

Something is going on if you're only getting 200 miles to a tank. Either super shitty gas or something else. I've never gotten that bad of mileage, in my current tacoma or the 2011 6 speed I had.

Exactly, even on my daily driving around town I still get 17.5-18.5 mpg with the crappy winter blend fuel with 10% ethanol. Summer time I get 19-20 city and 22 hwy (22.8 personal best hwy) All this with about 300-400 lbs of tools out back and A/C running on many occasion.

Yeah, I don't understand the horrible gas mileage. Something seems amiss.

    Absolutely.

I drive like an idiot, and my low fuel light comes on at 280 miles religiously, and I can still squeeze another 25 out it without even trying.

You should be getting another hundred out of each tank.

True. This is the exact reason I bought my base 06 RC 4x4, simplicity and reliability.

I thought we already saw prototype pics with Toyota testing the new drive train? Either way the rumor i read is that it will keep basically the same frame/suspension but that's all the would carryover.

I agree something seems wrong. I recently took it to Toyota and did a full tune up for nearly $1,0000. I thought that would fix my poor gas mileage. I was very unhappy when my next tank (40% highway/60 city) came out as 12.7mpg on fuelly after converting for tire size.

The highest I have ever achieved was 19mpg on all highway @ 50mph.

I only use Chevron gas, and usually put in 89 octane (up to 10% ethonal).

I don't think I could get it down to 12.7 MPG without trying hard. Idling, using 4 HI everywhere, lead foot starts everywhere, then maybe I'd approach that number.

Even 4HI in the winter, idling to warm up many times, and driving in a snowstorm I got 14-15.

I run 93 shell. I seem to actually get slightly better mileage on 87, but the engine ticks more and seems to have a bit less power on 87.

Yeah (stating the obvious) something is wrong. At 50 I would get probably 20-21 at LEAST. I just had a tank of 87 shell at 17.1 MPG at 75-80 mph the whole way. Lots of quick acceleration. hmm....

I would look at these things. Did you have it scanned for any stored codes? Personally I would check stuck e-brake, frozen brake calipers, double check gap on spark plugs, air filter.

Lift the truck off the ground and spin the tires. See how freely they spin. Even if you had it tuned, I'd still check all those things. People make mistakes.

Have you tried putting in 87 octane? I have noticed that higher octane doesn't necessarily give better mileage, and I'd even say it can get you worse mileage.

    This is my experience.

I get what I think is slightly more power and the engine sounds better on 93, but I lose a bit of mileage over 87. Only 1 MPG or so, but I still seem to lose a bit.
