Why did you need to use roadside assistance?

What has been your experience with roadside assistance?

    Why did you need it?

    How was the service?

    Were there any costs involved?

    I will start.

My family and I were cruising home today in my Taco after a long weekend and an out of town funeral. I had a bit of brown bottle flu. After driving about 20 minutes to the interstate, wife says "I will drive if you want me to." Feeling like 10 lbs of sh*t in a 5 lb bag, it sounded like a good idea.

So... I get relaxed in the passenger seat lower my head and doze off. She wakes me a while later, saying that the cruise control stopped working. Well the truck wasn't running either, as we coasted to the shoulder OUT OF GAS.

We had been on the road for well over an hour. There was a solid 1/4 tank when we switched. She passed at least a dozen perfectly good gas stations while I was asleep. But, obviously it is my fault because I did not remind her that vehicles require fuel to move.

I got ahold of roadside assistance through the app on my phone. It took about an hour for the guy to get there with 3 beautiful gallons of unleaded.

Toyota said the actual cost of the fuel was not covered but the delivery was covered. He took down my mileage and VIN. I asked how much for the gas. No charge. Evidently the three gallons is covered by the roadside assistance.

Really glad I was covered. I did not feel like walking 10 miles round trip to the nearest gas station.

I never expected to need it. I probably never would have needed it if I would have just left the driving to myself.

I was in Charleston for school and I guess just forgot to get gas. Ran out of gas on the big bridge there. Local company brought me a gallon of gas after I called my insurance company (allstate). Never saw a bill or increase in my rates.

I did however feel like an idiot.

I've never used Dealership style roadside assistance. Unless of course, the truck was under factory warranty and the transmission falls out or the diffs explode...then I'd be calling every Toyota dealer regardless of 'roadside' assistance.

I carry AAA. Not always the quickest (I don't think any roadside assistance services are fast) - but they've been VERY good to work with and no surprises. AAA covers ALL vehicles in your name/family.

My wife used it for a smashed rim on her car last week.

II have triple A on our vehicles. I've never used it but she usually does a couple times a year for flats or whatever. I work 150 miles from home during the week and I'm not around to help and she won't learn how to do it herself

Had to use it once....and even then it wasnt a real emergency.

But anyways was getting all set to go hiking for the day. We out to start my Truck and nothing. Lights in cab turned on but got nothing turning over. Mind you id driven it a week earlier with no problems (trucks not my daily driver). So i figure whatever ill jump it off my car (figuring i left a light on or something). Still wouldnt start. Called up my dad who came over with a old starter/charger thingy he had. Still wouldnt start.

So called up Toyota and explained what was going on. I was right at the 3 year mark but guy had me call the road side assistance people. They sent a tow truck and towed my truck to the dealership (which was only 15 minutes away). Dealership took 3 hours to "diagnose" that it was the battery. Replaced it for free and upgraded to the next size up battery too.

Kind of sucked since it ruined my day. Dealership wouldnt let me just bring in the dead battery but said they had to have the whole truck which was a bit annoying too. A simple 30 minute trip instead of ~5 hours total.

Glad it all worked out for you, but..........

Wow. My Taco has a 20 gallon tank. 5 gallons at 'cruising' would be more than 100 miles. So are our gauges that inaccurate, or was she driving really fast? :D

Sounds like someone needs remedial drivers ed on gauge monitoring. Some folks can't read analog anymore, they have to have idiot lights, like the 'low fuel' nonsense. But if your truck has one............

And yeah, of course it was your fault. Get used to it. :p

Important point to note with AAA - It covers those covered - individual covers the individual, family covers the family.

It does not matter what/whose car you are in. If you have AAA and you are road tripping in a friends rig - you are covered in your friends rig.

Haha. We have been married 10 years. I am too tired to look for a new one. Even though she irritated the piss out of me today, I am still very fond of her.
