Thanks for the info! I've only had my '13 for about 3 months and was not aware of the problem or the TW 2012 thread addressing this issue (I wouldn't have thought to check the u-bolts for proper torque). I will check mine. Threads like yours are useful (especially when dealing with critical components) for new members who haven't had the time yet to check out all 15 million TW threads or Tacoma issues.

My reasoning for thinking the spec of 37ft-lbs on the 2nd gen is incorrect is that the hilux trucks from 1979-1995 also use 14mm u-bolts that get torqued to 84ft-lbs IIRC, while the 1st gen tacomas (still 14mm) are 77 ft-lbs IIRC. I may have those numbers reversed.

I'm not going to say that its a misprint, it may well have been the designated torque by the same brain-dead engineer that designed the entire 3 leaf spring rear suspension, or it's pathetic 4 leaf upgrade. Either way, 37 of 44 ft-lbs is a joke IMHO.

I agree with you that the manufacture recommendation is too low.

Today I installed helper springs. Like your U-bolts mine were only a little more than finger tight and two were finger tight. They were not even torqued to Toyota's ridiculous low torque specs. I am not sure how the read end even stayed under this thing. On installing my new helper springs I torqued my U-bolts as tight as I could get them with a 3/8 ratchet and socket. Certainly less than 70 pounds all others suggest, but much tighter than the 5 or 10 pounds that they were originally torqued to.

So like you I strongly suggest that everyone check their rear spring U-bolts torque even if they only bring them up to Toyota's torque specs.
