What brand of cattle guards/front bumpers are lower in cost and still do the job for a Tacoma? Are there any under $500? It seems like a good investment for the first time one hits a deer and has a 1,000 insurance deductible.

I honestly have not looked at all the less expensive "cattle gaurds" that are available, but I can assure you that you cannot buy anything that is going to hold up to hitting a deer for under 500 bucks. You will have to be in the 1000+ range in order to get heavy duty enough protection to withstand an impact like that. Any of the "brush gaurds" or "push bar" type bolt on systems that fit around your stock bumper will fold up and smash the front of the Tacoma anyways if you hit anything larger than a squirrel!
