I turn it on with my finger and use the same method to turn it off when I've reached my destination.

Definitely appreciate this thread, I plan on getting one myself. Got hit by a woman who I think ran a stop sign. She claimed I ran the stop (4 way stop intersection) and now my insurance company is arguing with hers. A dash cam would have definitely help resolve this.

I used a GoPro for quite a while as a dash cam. I've since bought a actual dash cam but the GoPro works pretty good for that. The flaw you talk about is the reason that I went on and purchased a dash cam.

    How mine "was" set up

FWIW....those of you lookin into GO-pros...there are cheaper alternatives that work just aswell. they look the same and function just as well. call it a knock off if you want but they are $90.00 to $110.00.
    -SJ4000
    -SJ6000
    -Dazzne P2

find them on Amazon.com. there are various versions depending on what you want to use them for...make sure to read their descriptions as some are WIFI and some arent....some are water proof and some Arent. but for the price of a new go-pro you can have 3 or 4 of these.

i have a SJ6000 and the picture quality is amazing for $100.00. also takes still pictures. just throwing this out there bc not alot of people know about these yet.

I've been having a dash cam for over a year now and have caught some cool things. It was given to me as a Christmas gift last year so its not a high dollar or great quality(AVI) but it gets the job done. Will eventually upgrade to a HD one maybe but its not that important. This is video from when I put my truck on its side last January when Louisiana got all that ice. Had to go to work and Louisianans aren't made to drive in the snow.

Mobius makes a great little camera I use as a dash cam. There's a british guy on youtube who does a lot of great dashcam reviews.

ATV trail dents, many, many lights, 4-6 beer cans.
Got a Garmin 20 over Christmas, not the most unobtrusive but very easy to use and good low light capture, along with adjustable g-force 'protected write' sensitivity made it a solid buy on sale.

Definitely a nice plus to have for those times in traffic you wish you got that asshat who nicked your mirror on capture :D

    going to be fun!
I had this installed today it's a blackbox dash cam….

I did have another off brand cam in the truck but it just was not getting good quality video.

So I bit the bullet and had this installed along with my Viper 5806 remote start and alarm…

So far I've added an Advance folding bed cover and since removed it. Gave it to my son in Maine, he has an 05 2wd. GT perfect fit seat covers. Weathertech floor mats and window vent visors. Waag center brush/grill guard. Hose clamp tailgate mod. Turned off the seat belt chime. Added Ultra-Gauge. Trailer hitch. Softopper. Replaced sun visors with slide out style. Toyota bed extender. Had Firestone Destinations and now Michelin LTX AT2 in stock size. More mods to come; Fog lights, locking storage in bed, intermittent wipers. Now looking for Radio/HU upgrade. and maybe a lift way down the road.
So what video editing software is everyone using ?

I have the G1W and I'm still working out mounting it in a sweet spot so it's out of view. I have not captured anything spectacular yet just a couple people going straight from the left turn lane because they forgot where they were. The 3 minute segments are a little long when your target segment is near the end of that 3 minutes so I'd like to trim it down. Oh and free is best but cheap is good.

We run a Cobra CDR 820 in our truck. We used to have a cheap Russian one but the quality of the video sucked and didn't pick up anything at night. Still did its job sort of. This new one is a lot better. Id like to pick up a second one for my truck. Here is a test video I made:
    http://youtu.be/RDsn-vydHfA

Feel free to check out my other videos and subscribe, I make compilation videos with my good footage.

As far as editing footage I use the gopro software, since I already have it. Only bad thing is it doesn't recognize the file type of the videos. So I have to open them up in windows movie maker and save them all as a different file and then I can open them ok in gopro. I'd like to get a better editing program, I'm just not sure what to buy as there's so many.

I setup a G1WH in my Tacoma the other day. So far, so good. For the price of the unit ($60), I really can't complain. Video quality is great and it's not too bulky of a unit. Nice that it starts and stops with the truck - set it and forget it.

We'll see how it holds up over time. Reliability with these units seem to be hit and miss.

Here's a review of the unit:
