I haven't had a problem last 3 years I've done it. Actually had a cop compliment me on them at a food drive they had a few days ago.

 

Avoid copious amounts of blue and red bulbs and you'll probably be just fine.

technically they are illegal just for the simple fact that they are not DOT approved - so yeah you could get a ticket for it (highly unlikely) more on the line of "turn it of" warning if the grinch pulls you over...
