I'm wanting to put a remote starter on my fiancé's 2012 Tacoma, it's a double cab V6 Trd. I've herd that sometimes they cause problems, can anyone confirm this? The one I am looking at is the arctic start, does anyone know if this is a good brand? I've never messed with a remote starter so I'm ignorant on this subject. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

I tried to get one at the dealership but they said Toyota doesn't make one for that truck.

The only issues I've heard of is that some of those kits require splicing of the factory wiring harness, and if you have some back door "installer" who just got out of high school for the day, they can f**k it up pretty good.

As long as you have a pro install it should be fine.... could possibly void your warranty though... if its seen.

    just my $.02

Mine was done by the dealer at the dealer. So screw then if they try doing that.

yeah I didn't think about the warranty being voided. I was looking at this place in Pittsburgh called 21st century, they have a 4.5 star rating but all they deal is those arctic start brand. He told me just for the starter is would be $250 installed. Would that be considered cheap or not?

I paid $450 for a viper two way system a few years ago. Installed it myself. Then after a few years I'm pretty sure something internal went bad cause it developed a parasitic draw that would kill the truck battery if not started more than once a week. Other than that it worked great.

Something to keep in mind is that you might have to pay extra for a module to simulate a key.

i paid 635 for mine installed, that was remote start, with 2way paging, which is an awesome feature and about a mile range. and and alarm. the two way paging was the biggest feature i wanted.

what hes probably not telling you is there is a modual that needs to be installed for a lot of features to work i believe, my 11 needed one i think it added another $75.00

250 is good for the basic ones add more features and the price increases, window break sensor, tailgate sensor, canopy sensor 2 way paging,

You might still need a module to fake the key. Not sure if that system has a work around for a chipped key or not.

Search for "viper 4205v with chipped key" and you'll see some forums with some suggestions as to what to get for the key issue.

If you have a Double Cab TRD, you have a transponder key, and you'll also need a DBALL. Your installer will fill you in on why and how much.

I had a Compustar on my Tacoma and a Viper on my wife's 4Runner and never had an issue out of any of them. My .02 is to find a reputable installer and make them show you other installs they have done. A good friend of mine had one installed, cant remember the brand, by a not so good installer and it ended up frying his entire electrical system.

I had Vipers 5704 remote start/alarm installed shortly after purchasing mine in 2011. works fantastic and no issues.
Like it so much, just had their smartstart module installed allowing starting via my cellphone and even ipad-------------very cool:cool:
I would recommend professional installation though as others have mentioned.
Not familiar with arctic start though so...............:notsure:
