Typical dealership ploy to try to sell you a new car. Just got this from Honda. It's like the 6th time since I bought the car three years ago.

PS - I own the car outright.

It's just a common dealer tactic to get you on the lot. You'll get all jazzed up about a 2015 4x4, then the dealer will be like "oh, because of the miles on your truck it's worth a little less than we thought", or "we'd have to take $800 off the trade value because of this little dent", or "looks like this trucks seen some harsh off road use" and before you know it your truck is worth $10,000 less than the new one your salivating over. So the'll put the numbers together, and get you thinking "well, it IS a newer truck with a warranty, so what's the big deal if I start over with a 72 month loan..." And at the end of the day you just got a new truck, more payments, registration and tax fees, etc... And the salesman is in the back room laughing about the sucker he just flipped.

    In short, don't do it.

Churning sales like this is normal; their offers will stop after the vehicle is too old for them to care. Salesmen are expected to use this tactic.
If you're interested, make them work out the deal on paper and then think about it; commit to leving the dealership with the offer (signing isn't necessary, just their handwriting).
If they're serious you'll be welcome a week later.
But they're not. Good education though if you've got the time to spare.
P.S. Don't think you'll actually be able to depart with anything on paper.

All automobile companies use this ploy...

It's to take advantage of uneducated consumers that only look at their monthly vehicle payments as the value of the vehicle... it's a manipulation of the consumer who walks in says, "I have a $400/month budget... what can I get for that?".

Discussing monthly payments as a goal when negotiating pricing with the dealer is not advised without doing calculations on your end prior to arriving to dealer with discount, interest rate, fees, and tax being solidly known.

It's best to discuss the price of the vehicle you want, then have them work out the vehicle your trading in seperate. Then discuss interest rates and payments to combine everything.

These guys are just jealous because they aren't getting the same offer.

My best friend bought a new 2009 GMC 2500HD Diesel. The dealership he bought his truck from called him a year or so later. His truck had 50k miles on it. They told him, we got a large request by a gas well company wanting as many used 3/4 Ton diesel quad cab trucks as we can supply them. We will give you X for you truck cash or trade it in on a new one. He went and got a 2011 same truck, same options, zero miles, with a lower payment than he had on his 2009.

I would go check it out and see what they offer. Tell them you want to keep your mods and them be installed on your new truck.

66 months or 72 months, who cares you have a payment. Most likely before you pay it off you will trade it off anyone. Unless you are planning on keeping it forever I'd go look.

I don't know anything about a rebate... However you may have better credit now and there fore they could offer a better interest rate hence a lower payment which would allow for a higher balance at the same payment amount. If you want the new truck check it out, if you don't want a new truck ignore them. I view new vehicle purchases as 3 separate deals as do most dealers. Deal #1 The sales price of vehicle I am purchasing. Deal #2 The sales price of any vehicles I am selling/trading in. Deal #3 The financing terms for any vehicle I intend to not pay cash for. I am also very aware of all of the dealer fees that they try to add to any and all of these different deals. If any of these deals deals to much of a screw job than all of these deals are off and I leave. I never go car shopping with out being pre approved for a new car loan with my own lender at rates and terms I am willing to accept before I leave home. This way I just won of the deals before I started. I also have actual research of the value of my trade printed to refute their offers. I do the same for the purchase. Use the what did you pay for your 2015 thread here against them. Check out CarBuyingTips.com. Good luck!

You will loose again as soon as you sign the papers. You will have to pay tax all over again. That's most likely close to 3k. So that means in 3 yrs you spent close to 6 k in taxes alone.

he replies "well does it have to be a 4x4, how about if its a 4x2 V6?... better come by so that we can show you some options"

    LMAO no thanks!

I can't remember a time when I've ever heard of a rebate on a Tacoma product? I've seen a buck or two back on Tundra's. But always have heard the Tacoma practically sells itself, so no need for incentives like you see on domestic brands.

Yeah, but word's out for actual and real that the 2016 is gonna be a redesign, so now they need to give folks an incentive not to buy now and not hold off.

Not necessarily..... In Pennsylvania at least, you only pay taxes on the difference between trade-in value & new truck.

When I traded in my 2003 Dodge Ram - the Toyota dealer gave me $19,500 in trade-in. The new tacoma was $29,500. I only paid taxes on $10,000.

If I would've sold my Dodge privately and took a wad of cash into the Toyota dealer, I would've been paying taxes on $29,500.

I got one of those in the mail yesterday from Piercey Toyota.

    $3000 over black book!

Black book for 2011 Tacoma is $17,500.

    Your offer: $20,500!

That seemed a tad high for a regular cab base model 4x4. They seemed to be offering me almost exactly what I originally paid for it off the floor a touch over four years ago.

So I found a site that calculates "black book" prices (NOT BLUE book - that's different!)

Reg cab 4x4 base model with my mileage was somewhere between 11 and 14.

So their mailer was calculated off of some premium trim level - double cab 4x4? who knows?

I wouldn't have done it anyway - WAY too much time and effort poured into building it the way I want it and I'd hate to start over from scratch.

But the offer was obviously NOT what it appeared on the surface to be.

That's gonna vary from state to state.
