Anyone ever attempted to swap in a 2012 or higher 4 Runner engine into a 2nd Gen Tacoma ?

The 4Runners have about 270HP and the Tacoma comes with about 236HP ?

Curious if anyone attempted this ?

Is it worth the headache and pain in the ass for that extra 34 hp?

As far as trucks are concerned it's Torque that is important and at what RPM it peaks. HP is secondary.

Exactly, I doubt this is power you could feel.

it's a noticeable gain in power, it's just not worth that much effort.

Horsepower is a byproduct of torque fyi

The mistake most people make when engaging in this debate is considering horsepower and torque independently. Almost everyone argues as if they are separate, unrelated values. They aren’t.
Horsepower = (Torque x RPMs) / 5252 This equation is the second most important thing on this page, and it’s the reason that anyone telling you that horsepower and torque should be considered equally and separately is significantly off-base. The fact of the matter is that horsepower is the product of torque and another value — RPMs (divided by 5252). It’s not unrelated, separate, or different.

What an amazing contribution to this thread. Thank you SO MUCH.

I think it is official that this forum has many people with below average IQs....

    But anyway.

It would be a unique swap. Shouldn't require any major changes assuming the motor mounts, and everything would bolt right on.

Wiring harness and ECU swap might be a bit of a pain in the rear. Probably be easier to go with a Mega squirt or something else to handle engine management, then you would have huge tuning options.

At the end of the day a blower would probably be your best bet.

It'd be cheaper in the long run to just buy the 3rd gen tacoma with supposedly upgraded power plant.

if your gonna spend the time and money swapping engines might as well throw a LS crate motor in and go balls to the wall!

Just curious if you did the swap? I have a 2012 with a seized motor and am considering the swap myself since it has to be changed anyway.

it probably makes more power due to having dual VVTi cam phasers where as the Tacoma has one.
I don’t know if anything else is needed to control that besides just a mechanical engine swap, such as ECU tuning or using a 4Runner ECU if that’s even possible.

Some of this Some of that
What others have said, not worth the effort. From what I understand the 4 runner and the Fj cruiser came with dual vvti whereas the taco came with single. Would be quite a bit of work to make that work

I drove a lot of FJ's and I could never tell the difference between the single and dual vvti models just by driving alone.

Very similar engines, biggest issue is cost, even used the 2010+ 1GR dual is 6000$ here, then you need wiring and ecu. At least you could sell the current engine.

A supercharger makes way more sense.
