I'll look into that bleeding method. Was unaware there was anything different with bleeding a Taco. Thanks for the link.
Yes, engine braking with towing is, imo, necessary. But I have yet to tow.
Just checked my can of fluid. ATE Super Blue. Been about two years since I changed it out, had forgotten that little bit of maintenance. Still, two years isn't exactly a long time for brake fluid.

Still interested in upgrading the size of my front brakes, though. I guess I'll have to be the guinea pig for research of donor vehicles......

If I did that I would probably flip the truck end over end. as stated earlier by Ding, I can lock mine up with a toe stab, All stock.

I also think you have a serious issue with your brake system. Maybe too many improvements.

I have never heard this before! I always wondered why everyone complained about the bad brake feel, when mine make the tires skid.
    Thanks for the good info:)

Just checked my brakes with 105,000 miles on them.
They have a lot more pad left to go still.

If your brake pedal feels hard and you can't lock it up, you might have a bad brake booster.

My truck slows down OK during normal driving even with 315s. However, as soon as I tow16-18' boat, I can definitely tell that the brakes fade easily and isn't adequate at times. I'm looking into the Stoptech BBK, but it would be awesome if there was an alternative to that.

Interesting info, nd4spdbh. That would explain a lot.

So the update on my truck is thus:
Bit the bullet and took it to the stealership to have them bleed it using their phancy machine. Fixed! I'm guessing air was introduced into the ABS pump when I rolled the truck over a year ago. That's the one part of the system I can't do much with.

Also, I may have an answer to a BBK without getting spendy.

I stopped in to The Truck Shop in San Diego a few weeks back to pick up some Built Right UCAs (identical to TC in every way, but $200 cheaper!). Chatted up the owner about brakes. Shocked when he said he had a BBK for $700!! He wouldn't tell me what vehicle he had pulled them from, but told me that it's a 100% bolt-in with no modification of anything, just a need for 17" wheels or bigger :(
He stepped out, and his wife finished my transaction. She was a little more forthright with info. They use brakes out of a Tundra. Stupid me didn't ask for further details, but there was a truck there that had said BBK on it.
What we're looking for is a brake system from a Tundra where the caliper is an opposed-four piston (two per side), and the brake line comes into the center of the rear at a 45* angle; where the line comes in is 90* to a blank for another brake line (so the casting can be used for both sides, only dependent on which blank is drilled). So basically look for Tundra brakes that are larger than ours where the back side has a V in the middle for the brake line, one leg of the V tapped.

Lemme see if I can use The Google for an image......

    This one:

I want to say we're looking for something like a 2006 Tundra, but I'm not 100% on that. Slotted and cross-drilled rotors included in The Truck Stop's kit, as are calipers and pads.

Was the truck that you saw a second gen Tacoma? For years, the 1st gen Tacoma and 3rd gen 4Runners guys have been upgrading their calipers and rotors using the 1st gen Tundra components. It's a direct swap and would make a big improvement.

I have not heard or looked into checking if it's doable on the 2nd gen Tacoma. The 1st gen Tundra only requires a 16" wheel to clear so I'm going to assume that it's off a 2nd gen Tundra if it requires a 17" wheel.

The truck I saw it on was a 2nd Gen, 2010+ I believe (had the LED tails).

Yeah, I knew the 1st Gen guys had their source. I started this thread not to get bashed about supposedly not knowing what I was doing  but to see if anyone had figured out if there was a similar option for us. Turns out I got my answer away from the forum!

Any 2nd Gen owners wanting to upgrade the stock brake size without spending two grand to do it.

When I get more funds and stop pouring funds into other projects. Next up is seeing if I can fit a 16"-travel shock into the rear wheel well
