Hey guys - I've got intermittent clicking when I start my truck. I have a brand new battery and the alternator is good. I've looked but can't find a good source of video or a detailed instruction on how to swap out the starter on my 2009 4.0.

I live in Winnipeg and it's -20 out right now and I want to know exactly what I'm doing before I go do it :)

My plan to repair is thusly:

    1. Remove and clean all connections. And if that doesn't solve the problem:
    2. purchase rebuilt starter and that solenoid rebuild kit.
    3. Try to rebuild solenoid only and if that doesn't solve the problem:
    4. Replace the starter.

Any photos or videos would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I don't have any videos or etc, but it sounds like you have a good plan.

I would make finding a heated garage as Step 1 of my plan and disconnecting the negative battery cable as Step 2.

It is most probably the copper starter solenoid contacts, but some replace the plunger contact as well especially if it is burned or pitted. In the interim, sometimes tapping the starter with a hammer will reseat the contacts enough so you can start your engine.

Starter contacts likely the problem - fix with video above. If you want someone else to do that - remove starter yourself and take to an electrical rebuilder shop. You can't buy a better starter than the one that came with the truck.

I completed this last night, fixed my issue. Starts a lot stronger and faster now, and I dont have the intermittent start problem. Was a bit of a bitch to get out. Took me two hours start to finish, including jacking the truck up and removing the wheel.
