Reason not to get the tow package?

Hope this isn't an idiot noob question...

Looking at a DCSB 4x4 V6 AT. Most likely with TRD O/R.

Checking the Toyota website it seems in a few different areas (tried a variety of state zip codes) this configuration always comes with the tow package no mater what level of trim you select.

I really have no intention of towing anything ever, will have a relatively light weight flip up tent camera shell (approx 300lbs, a FlipPac).

Is there any *negative* to the two package besides the extra price? I guess there is some extra weight in the various coolers and upgrade alt? What about space under the hood? I'd like to add a second battery for camp power - do tow package accessories eat up space I might want for that extra battery?

    Thanks!

I think the tow package is worth it. Transmission cooler, bigger batter, better hitch and pin setup. I would say get it. Helps if you want to resell it too later down the line.

There is always that one off chance that you may tow in the future.

Toyota's "build a Tacoma" only lets you select configurations that exist on dealer lots (inventory) in the sales region you've provided with your zip code info. So they don't all come with tow packages, but all the trucks similar to what you built on Toyota.com and are available to buy DO have tow packages.

I don't think you need the tow package. Try calling a dealer and seeing what they can do for you, you could always try placing an order, or maybe they can find it for you.

You get no down side to it thats for sure. You'll have better resale value and you won't loose any space under the hood. Everything you get out of it will be a positive.

Believe me, if you are going to tow at all, the wiring harness is worth the price of admission alone. I could write a book on why, but suffice it to say the plug and play aftermarket trailer wiring harnesses are complete shit- COMPLETE.

The tow package comes with a 130 amp alternator. You'll want that if you're going to add a house battery (second battery for camp power).

    Wow, super fast answers!

Thank you everyone, sounds like no down side besides price and that even with the extra $$$ it is probably decent value. I won't go out of my way to avoid it then.

@Jethro - Thanks for the pointer on the wiring harness, I suppose it is certainly possible I might have an occasional tow at some point in my future if even with just a rented trailer for some reason.

@PeeRunner - Thanks for the tip on the "build your Tacoma" part of the site. I figured that was the case as options did vary a bit with zip code. While I might order up a specific configuration with a dealer it looks like very, very close to what I want (assuming I get a tow package) is pretty widely available already.

@bicyclist - Good point on the alternator and my second battery!

    Thanks again everyone!

There's definitely no downside to buying a Tacoma with the factory tow package. I bought one without the tow package and added my own receiver and wiring and it did just fine. If you get one without the tow package, adding a class 3 receiver and a flat 4 connector is a piece of cake.

One of the few reasonably priced add ons from Toyota. Get it! You get the Hitch, 7 Pin Plug, Upgraded battery & alternator, engine oil cooler, tranny cooler if an auto, wiring under dash for a trailer brake controller, and some computer controlled trailer anti sway stuff and a class IV hitch with a 6400# tow rating. All for $650 MSRP. The "Port Added Hitch" is a rip off! For 550 you get a Class 3 hitch and a 4 pin plug and a 3500# tow rating. If they offer the full factory tow pack, get it! If it is the Port Hitch set up you can do better cheaper, it isn't worth it.

Welcome. Not many people notice or are aware of that being how the website works, I didn't either until I talked with Toyota about it and they confirmed that's how it works, Build a Tacoma is a sales feature.

No question is a bad question. I was following behind a Silverado today that was brand new off the lot. I was stunned to look down and see that he did not have any hitch or tow package on it. I know a lot of people never use their hitch but that one time you do need it you will be beating your self up about it. Plus you get two free bonuses for having the tow package... Recovery point if you ever need it, plus if you have a hitch in and get rear ended it will sometimes save you from some extra bumper damage. Well worth it in the long run!

None at all. Not even the price. What you get for the price, you'd never be able to replicate for half the price.

And the resale value is worth the price alone. You'll open up your possible buying audience 10 fold.

Great, I am definitely educated now! Will get the tow package for sure. Excellent points from everyone. @RKCRUZA thanks for the warning about the "port added hitch" option, will be sure to check carefully when looking at inventories for the correct tow package.

    Thanks again!

The tow package basically beefs up your transmission and slightly gives an to the electrical system. That alone is worth the price.

If you are just walking through the lot, just look at the back of the truck...if there is a 7 pin (big receptacle) mounted on the left of the hitch it is most likely Factory Tow Package. If you see a hitch with the little 4 pin plug next to it is a Port added hitch, also Factory Tow is listed near the end of the options on the Vehicle Sheet and will list all the goodies.
