4 cyl 4x4 enough?

Hey guys I like the 4cyl 4x4 because of the cost, efficiency, and the fact its a 4x4 that wont kill me for daily commuting!

Primary use will be for going to school which is like a 45 min ride.

Also during the summer I live on a small island with lots of dirt roads and beaches to drive on.

The beach I clearly need 4wd for but i've never needed a rear locker up to this point for anything I've done offroad.

My question is will the 4cyl be enough for what I'm doing? Commuting and light offroading.

 

Absolutely! I have a red 4 banger 4x4 and have no problems with it for that purpose.
I mainly haul stuff for home repairs. Mostly commute with it. and do some light trails. Do I sometimes wish it had more power. not often.
Price was right. And the four banger is a dependable engine.

 

Your best bet is to drive both a V6 truck and a 4 banger and see which suits your needs.

I have had no problem hauling up to 1,000 Lbs of stuff. with my 4 cylinder, and enjoy the 18-20MPG I get with it.
But def. test drive both!
$25,000 Vs. $30,000 (at least here in NY.)

 

Not sure why, I guess driving habbits, but I get better milege than most 22-23 city 25-26 hwy. thats the reason I went with the 4 cyl. My wifes 4runner V6 gets 21-22 all the time.

 

depends if you like the power and affordability of the 4 banger. I like the V8 muscle of the Tundra, but the affordability of it is hard to swallow.

I just picked up my 4 cyl 4x4 the other week and i absolutely love this truck. Used it to move a friend over the weekend and handled some pretty large loads with ease. But most of the time it will be used as a commuter which it does great for that.

Just give it a nice tough test drive. I took mine on an interstate, back roads, and from a full stop at the bottom of a huge hill and i was very surprised on all accounts. As long as it fits your needs i say go for it, the engine is tough as hell.

 

the truck has plenty of power for everyday uses and 4x4. Especially in 4x4 Low range it is invincible

 

Perfectly happy with mine (not 4x4, but close enough). Does everything I ask of it that it's designed to do. I have yet to tow with it, but will be towing a small boat soon enough.

 

Alright thanks guys, I think I might spend the extra grand to get the SR5 package as it seems like its certainly wortwhile to have.

 

Get real, I tow a 2800# camper. And I can go 80 MPH if I want. It's rated to tow 3500, and it will do so. If you have an aversion to using the full power of the truck, buy the V6, and push the pedal half way.

I love my 4 banger... wish I had the 4x4 in it.

 

Leaving aside the money issue (duh) the question is where do you wanna be stronger? On the street or on the trails?
V6 4x4 is faster and it tows more
4cyl 4x4 is usualy lighter and is better off road (it has 4.10 gears with a manual trans whereas V6 has 3.73 gears most of the time with auto trans - could be manual too).
If you tow get the V6 prerunner
If you wanna win races get the Xrunner
If you want to have the next best off road vehicle next to the Fj Cruiser that is also good on gas, cheap to buy and fun to drive get the 4cyl 4x4 single cab.

Never driven a 4....but I think my 6 is a dog! so....I say negative on the 4!

I LOVE my 4 cylinder 4x4 access cab Taco. Gets good mileage (23-24 consistently) and the 4 cylinder is well known for its legendary reliabiity. Bought new last April and have 21K and counting... not one complaint.
