Brake light trouble

I need some help. I have a 2011 tacoma. My pass side brake light does not work. The other lights on that side do work. I swapped the drivers side and pass side taillight assembly's. The pass side works on the drivers side, the drivers side does not work on the pass side. The wires look OK and the plug seems to be OK. It's weird that only the pass side brake light doesn't work. The leds come on when the lights are turned on but don't get brighter when the brake pedal is pushed. Anyone have any ideas?

 

If you have access to a multimeter, Take the brake light connector off the back and see if you have 12VDC going to the connector when you have someone hit the brakes.
If not then you have a break, a ground, or another connector inline that is corroded in the passenger braking circuit.
I don't have a wiring diagram of that but if no voltage is found then you can half split the problem by looking for another connector inline and seeing if you have voltage there.

Any ideas where I can get a wiring diagram. Can't seem to find one online. I would like to know which wire is for the brake in the connector on that side.

 

Thanks for the help. I found the problem. I used an ohm meter between the drivers side and pass side connectors, all were good except the the brake light wire. So I knew the problem had to be between the two connectors. I traced the wire back from the pass side and found a break in the wire. It was where toyota for some reason cut the wire loom, left a 2" gap then ran the wire loom all the way to the connector. In the 2" gap they taped it up with white vinyl tape, this was put in a plastic wire holder and taped to another cable. The vibration and movement in this wire holder cut through the tape then the brake light wire, the insulation was cut on 3 other wires. I fixed it and everything works now. I recommend everyone checking they're wires to head off any problems.

 

are you the original owner and can confirm no one has ever been in there messing with the wires ?...I ask because one thing about toyota reliability is electrical issues are extremely rare, unless someone has been in there installing stuff aftermarket.

and whereabout on the truck is the problem clip area ? front, back, middle, center ?

I am the original owner. The clip was on the pass side rear. The wires going to the pass side taillight connector, right by the frame. It was a real "cob job". Nothing else on the truck is like that, I looked.

Wow. Good job finding the problem. I agree that electrical issues are rare from Toyota. It's not like a Lucas (Prince of Darkness) electrical system.

 

OP I have a 2011 as well. I checked mine when I got home low and behold it was the same as yours. So I took the plastic piece off with black electrical tape I taped over the white tape on the signal cable then taped the two cables together and then zip tied both cables together. Hopefully that did the trick. Great find and thanks for posting this.

 

I checked a buddy's truck at work and his was just starting to wear through. Also a 2011.

 

OP, you might want to contact the NTSB and file this - this is no joke and could save lives, ya never know.

They are recalling leaf spring issues and this is in relation to brake lights which is just as if not more important than leaf springs
