I'm looking to buy either a Toyota truck/suv and am a bit confused.

Is there a new Tacoma model that offers both manual transmission and full time 4WD? From what I've been able to find out, the pre-runner is the part-time 4WD.

Is there *any* new Toyota vehicle that does? I think the FJ cruiser is one, but that is being discontinued.

I dont know why this information is so well hidden. Thanks for your help!

You are confused. A "PreRunner" is a two-wheel-drive configuration.

NO Tacoma model offers "full time" four wheel drive with ANY transmission. I'm not sure about FJ and 4Runner.

Unless** they changed something when they refreshed the engine in 2010(?) all manual tranny fj's are full time 4x4, not trying to argue, but that's what I had for a couple yrs

Thanks. Looks like the 2013 FJ Cruiser was the last year a manual + full-time 4WD was offered.

Only the most expensive 4Runner model has full-time 4WD, but no manual transmission.

Well then, it sucks. Can't understand the move away from manual transmission.

Wimps. Bad transmission or not, sounds like an excuse (one more next to: "wife cannot drive", "wasn't on the lot", "commute traffic", etc.)

Shifting a lot faster is relevant in drag racing.

There are important things you simply cant do with AT: like engine braking going downhill, or starting in 2nd or 3rd gear on slippery surfaces, or shifting directly from 2nd to 4th gear if you want, or going close to the redline. And it's also a lot more entertaining, u can do really fun stuff like shifting without touching the clutch.

By the way, what do you mean by "6 speed is trash"? How can a manual transmission be trash?

From reading around forums I gather the 6MT is crappy (notchy feel) and unreliable. The mule caught last summer seems to indicate the 6MT was heavily redesigned, so hopefully the issues have been addressed for the MY2016.

If you destroy a tire on a full-time 4x4, you have to replace all the tires to ensure all the tires have equal tread.

FYI..you can still shift with an auto.
downshifting is still a thing with our trans.. so is redlining. I can keep on a gear if i want to... then i shift.

    wow.. what a concept

If you rotate your tires every 5K they will all wear evenly. If I were you I would definitely make sure to have all the same size tires and make sure the tread depth is relatively uniform to keep from damaging the differentials.

Shift with an auto? You are merely suggesting the computer to perform the shift for you.

Why every car forum needs to be full of insecure males who for whatever reason don't drive a manual and instead of simply saying "whatever, I drive an auto because I want" will justify their choice (or lack of) with some idiotic comments about how they can "shift" their autos (or some other usual BS why manuals suck and autos are same or even better).

You may signal your desire to shift in a certain way to the computer, but the computer decides whether to obey you or not. For exmple, I dont think teh computer will ever allow you to redline the engine. Or accelerate very hard in 2nd gear, it will upshift for you at some point.

Nope. I was just answering to his aruguments. For your information, most of my family drives stick. My first car was manual. you dont know me :)

For what its worth... i was never trying to start anything. Seems like your the one who got butthurt.

in fact...if i leave my auto trans tacoma in the 2 position on my "shifter" it will reach redline in second gear.

everything you listed can be done with an auto, besides 2 -4 shift. For example going down a steep hill in 4low i leave it in 2 or 1 and it will not shift no matter what.

as for the 6 speed i read something about throwout bearing issues that were never resolved. i would not say its trash though

i think everyone should learn how to drive manual, you feel a lot more connected to the car.

i was surprised by the 5 speed auto in comparison to older autos i drove, it downshifts for you if you brake going down a steep hill
